Jelisa Oakley exploded for 19 points to help lead the Person
junior varsity girls to a 51-30 win over Riverside Friday.
The Rockets started strong, racing out to a 28-12 lead at
the half and continued to build on it. They also played well
on defense and found open teammates on offense
JV coach Richard Dickens said it was one of the most complete
games his team has played all year.
The girls really played well tonight, he observed.
The guards were looking for the post players inside,
and they were finishing around the basket pretty well. The
defense also created a lot of easy baskets. It was an all-around
good effort.
Along with Oakleys double-digit effort, Rachael Ward
finished with nine points, Jordann Davis eight, Kasse DeVaughn
five, Tondalia Richmond four, and Sidney Fitz, Alex Beauford
and Brittney Hicks with two each.
The Rockets upped their PAC-6 record to 6-4 with the win.
JV boys lose to Pirates
Ahead by seven points midway through the fourth quarter,
the Person boys junior varsity team let it slip away
and ended up losing, 47-43, to Riverside Friday.
In front 38-31 with 4:43 to go in the game, the Rockets were
outscored 16-5 in the final minutes.
Jarod Belvin (10 points) hit four clutch free throws in the
final minute to help seal the win for the Pirates. Sean Deniton
also had 10 points for Riverside.
Anthony Winbush was high man for the Rockets with 14 points,
followed by Nate McBrooms 12 and Dominique Banks
seven.
The defeat left Person with a 2-8 conference record and a
7-10 overall mark. The team is 1-7 in its last eight games.
