DURHAM The Person golf team ended up with its second
fifth-place finish of the season in the second Piedmont Athletic
Conference match held Monday at Falls Village Golf Course.
The Rockets completed the day with 176 points, 17 behind
third-place Riverside and Chapel Hill, who totaled 159.
Northern Durham placed first with a team score of 147 while
East Chapel Hill finished a distant second at 158. Host team
Southern Durham ended up in last with 234. Jordan was sixth
(182) and Hillside was seventh (211).
Joe Weinberger was Persons top scorer, shooting a 42
for nine holes. James Weinberger carded a 44, while Brice
Mitchell and Adam Bunn came in with scores of 45.
Rocket coach Mark Lunsford said the team struggled with its
short game, just as it had done in the PAC-6 opener at Chapel
Hill last week.
Its costing us a lot strokes right now,
said Lunsford of his squads struggles around the greens.
If we expect to hang around in the conference, well
need to improve in that area.
One of Persons preseason goals was to earn a team 4A
regional berth, but the Rockets will need to finish higher
than fifth in the PAC-6 in order to achieve that.
Person hosts Oxford Webb in a duals match at the Roxboro
Country Club on Thursday (2 p.m. start), and will also host
the third conference match next Monday, March 17.
