DURHAM It seems the Person Rocket pitching staff has
been flirting with no-hitters all season.
Freshman Dylan Dickens came within three outs of one back
on March 5 and Jeremy Peed hurled a two-hitter.
Well, one finally came to fruition Friday night as lefty
Chris Morgan kept the Southern Spartans hitless through five
innings in a 14-0 Person rout in Piedmont Athletic Conference
baseball action at the Southern High School field.
The game ended in the fifth because of the 10-run rule.
Morgan (seven strikeouts) allowed just one runner to reach
base in the game on a leadoff walk in the fourth inning. Otherwise
he was perfect.
Chris did a fine job today and was able to spot his
fastball early, said Rocket head coach Steve Evans.
As the game progressed we wanted him to work on his
breaking pitches since it was his first extended appearance
of the season. He and Trey [Davis] really worked well mixing
up the pitches and that really kept Southern off balance.
The Rockets received a lot of help from a Spartan squad that
was oddly playing its first game of the season. Person was
already playing its sixth contest.
Five errors, eight walks and three hit-batsmen aided the
Rockets in their 14-run attack.
Person scored its three first-inning runs without the benefit
of a hit, taking advantage of three base-on-balls, a hit-batter,
and several wild pitches from Southern starter Allan Lea.
We were fortunate to be able to take advantage of those
opportunities, said Evans.
All six runs in the third frame were earned. Peed smashed
a two-run triple and Ricky Crabtree belted a two-run double.
Person also got help from Craig Reid, who scored twice stole
two bases and reached base three times on a hit and two walks.
Trey Davis had a hit and two RBI, and Shawn Whitt (1-for-1,
run scored) and Marc Davis (1-for-2, two runs) contributed
also.
Evans said he was able to clear the bench and give his entire
team playing time after the Rockets broke it open in the third.
Person, now 6-0 and 2-0 in the conference, continues PAC-6
play on Tuesday when it hosts East Chapel Hill at Rocket Park
(5 p.m. start). The Rockets then travel to play Northern on
Thursday and South Granville Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
With Fridays shutout victory, Person pitching has allowed
just seven runs in the last five games, and has allowed 14
hits in that span.
Morgan now has a win and a save to his credit this season.
