DURHAM Joe Weinberger shot a 37 for nine holes and
finished tied for third overall as the Person High School
golf team inched a little closer up the Piedmont Athletic
Conference ranks with a fourth-place finish in the seasons
third conference match Monday afternoon at Willow Haven Golf
Course.
Northern Durham was the host team and finished first with
a total score of 150, followed by Riverside in second at 155,
East Chapel Hill in third with a 159, and Person in fourth
with a 162, by far its best team score in PAC-6 play to date.
James Weinberger carded a 41, and Brice Mitchell, Brett Perkins
and Zeb Barnette each totaled a 42 on the day, as Person crept
within 2 1/2 points of fourth place in the overall standings.
Rocket head coach Mark Lunsford sees continued improvement
in his squad, which has its sights set on a Division 4A regional
berth.
Its nice when your number five and six players
shoot a 42, he said. If we can continue scoring
42 and under, were going to be OK.
The Rockets had a non-conference duals match against Bartlett
Yancey at Caswell Pines on Tuesday, and dont see action
again until they host the seasons fourth PAC-6 match
on April 10 at the Roxboro Country Club (3 p.m. tee off).
The fourth conference match was originally supposed to be
played on April 8 at Croasdaile Golf Course in Durham, with
Riverside as the host team. But that contest has been switched
to April 21.
On Monday, Northerns Dalton Rich placed ahead of the
pack with a 35, and Riversides Zack Garrett was next
in line with a 36. Sharing the third spot with Weinberger
were Northern players Stratten Waldt and Stephan Lasser.
Rounding out Mondays order of finish were: Chapel Hill
(167) in fifth, Jordan (173) in sixth, Hillside (214) in seventh,
and Southern Durham (226) in last.
