Local softball teams compete

Roxboro Community School pitcher Ashleigh Newton tags Person’s Chelsea Murray out in an attempt to steal home in their softball game at Person field Monday. The Rocket JVs defeated the Bulldogs, 21-0, for their second win. RCS is in its first season of softball. The teams play each other again
on April 15.

The Roxboro Community School softball team opened its season with two defeats, including a loss to the Person High School junior varsity on Monday.

But head coach Mike Newton realizes it’s going to take time to establish the program, which is in its inaugural season.

“Our goal is to establish a base group of players that can utilize and build a program that can be competitive at the middle school and high school level,” he said. “Our team is very young compared to our competition. Our players have come a long way since we began practice but we still have a ways to go in getting them acclimated to the pace and strategies of the game.”

RCS has many seventh through ninth-grade players and just one junior on this year’s team.

Members of the 2008 Bulldogs (middle school and JV) are: Ashleigh Newton, Shianne Beaver, Kristen Adcock, Amber Cooley, Hannah Harris, Brittani Clayton, Casey Pleasants, Morgan Cooper, Summer Henderson, Kathleen Holbrook, Sarah Harris, Kelsey Gentry, Cori Rogers, Brittani Stone, Brooke Solomon, Brittany Smith, Allison Day, Erin Hicks, Morgan Martin, Megan Briggs, and Allyson Bell.
