ROUGEMONT Terry Dease of Oxford and Andrew Perry of
Hillsborough claimed victories in twin 75-lap races for the
Late Model Stock Car Division Saturday afternoon at Orange
County Speedway.
The two events were the featured attractions of the second
consecutive week of racing action at the three-eights mile
asphalt oval in Rougemont.
Dease started from the pole position in the first 75-lap
race and, despite losing the lead to Ryan Gray of Raleigh
on the opening circuit, claimed the win.
Dease regained the lead on the 49th lap when he battled past
Gray after the two raced side-by-side. From there, Dease held
on the rest of the way to claim the victory in the 11-car
field.
Gray, who started outside of the front row, wound up second
in the event, which was slowed by just one mandatory caution
period on lap 40.
Matt Lofton of Timberlake claimed a third-place finish in
the first race and was followed in the top five by Justin
Johnson of Roxboro in fourth place and Perry in the fifth
position.
The sixth through 10th positions in the event were claimed
by Mike Chambers of Timberlake, Leigh Carruthers of Wake Forest,
Kenny Forbes of Bullock, Tracey Chambers of Timberlake and
David Paschal of Raleigh.
The top six finishers in the first race were inverted for
the start of the second race. That inversion put Mike Chambers
on the pole and Perry on the outside of the front row.
Perry grabbed the lead at the outset of the race and held
it until lap 40 when Gray motored into the lead after the
race was halted for a mandatory caution.
Earlier, Gray had moved into third place by passing Johnson
and then into the second spot on the track by getting around
Lofton.
Gray held the lead position until lap 72 when Johnson bumped
him and sent him spinning coming out of turn four.
That dropped Gray to third and left Johnson headed to the
pits to receive a stop-and-go penalty for rough driving.
Perry, who had seemingly slipped out of contention for the
victory, moved back into the lead spot. When the race resumed
for a two-lap sprint to the finish, Perry held the advantage
and secured the win.
Carruthers wound up second in the 10-car field and was followed
by Gray in the third spot and Johnson in fourth place. Dease
rounded out the top five drivers in the race.
The sixth through 10th spots in the field were secured by
Forbes, Lofton, Mike Chambers, Tracey Chambers and Paschal.
Danny Willis Jr. holds off Brian Cole to claim Limited
Sportsman win
Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. grabbed the lead
on the seventh lap of the 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division
event and held on the rest of the way to claim his first win
of the season.
Willis had to withstand several challenges from runner-up
finisher Brian Cole of Roxboro before claiming the victory.
The second-place finish by Cole was his second in as many
races. He and Willis, who was third in the season-opening
event, are tied atop the divisions early point standings.
Thirteen-year-old competitor Darrell Wallace Jr. of Concord
finished third in the 10-car field and was followed in the
top five by Mark Oakley of Rougemont in fourth place and Wally
Latta of Rougemont in the fifth position.
For the second week in a row, Cole set the fast qualifying
time with a time trial lap of 14.598 seconds. He wound up
starting third after the top six qualifiers drew for position
prior to the start of the race.
Latta started from the pole position and was joined on the
front row by Oakley, who took the lead on the opening circuit
and held it for the first six laps before giving way to Willis.
Daryl Carver of Prospect Hill, the winner of the first race
of the season for the division, encountered problems in the
race and wound up with an eighth-place finish.
James Turner posts triumph in 35-lap Grand Stock Division
race
James Turner of Gibsonville rallied from a sixth starting
position in the 35-lap Grand Stock Division to secure a victory.
Turner, who was unable to qualify due to mechanical problems,
sped into the lead on lap 20 and held on the rest of the way.
The defending division champion owns a narrow two-point lead
in the divisions point race.
Michael Hatley of Chapel Hill, who started second in the
six-car field, wound up with a runner-up finish, just ahead
of third-place Tommy Chandler, who set the fast qualifying
time for the division with a lap of 15.973 seconds.
Cory Purnell of Yanceyville motored to a fourth-place finish,
while Brad Hancock of Danville, Va. rounded out the top five
finishers.
Jeff Wilson starts from the pole, proceeds to win Pure
Stock event
Jeff Wilson of Durham started from the pole position and
led every lap on the way to posting a victory in the 20-lap
race for the Pure Stock Division.
Wilson had earlier recorded the top qualifying time of 17.080
seconds.
Thomas Penny of Durham, who started fifth in the six-car
field, rallied to gain a runner-up finish at the end.
Keith Langston of Pittsboro was third in the event and was
followed in the top five by Chuck Rice of Leasburg in the
fourth position and Jason Richardson of Durham in fifth place.
Cole Canady posts second Mod-Four victory in two-week
span at OCS
Cole Canady of Whiteville scored his second Modified Four-Cylinder
Division in as many weeks at the three-eighths mile asphalt
oval.
Canady, who started outside on the front row in the 20-lap
race, grabbed the lead early on and roared to the win.
Fast qualifier Sam Pattici of Fuquay-Varina, who had a time
trial lap of 15.657 seconds, wound up second in the six-car
field and was followed by Bryan Andersen of Graham in the
third position.
Billy Tillman of Rougemont was fourth in the race, while
Rey Rierra of Fuquay-Varina rounded out the top-five finishers.
Defending champ Nicholas Pope wins Allison Legacy Series
race
Thirty Allison Legacy Series hit the asphalt for a 50-lap
race for the touring division.
Defending series champion Nicholas Pope of Taylorsville started
second in the event, but motored past pole sitter Michael
Cooper of Pittsboro early on to claim the lead for good.
Ryan Glenski of Mooresville wound up third in the race, while
Tyler Speer of Woodstock, Ga. was fourth and Josh Butler of
Matthews rounded out the top five finishers.

by Justin Allison of Salisbury, Dylan Sawyer of Pace, Fla.,
Brandon McReynolds of Mooresville, Johnny Petrozelle of Denver
and Austin Hogue of Manchester, Pa.
