In terms of local sports, history was made at the Piedmont
Community College athletic field Wednesday afternoon.
The Roxboro Community School Bulldogs won the first lacrosse
game ever played in Person County by a 4-2 score over the
Carrington Middle School Cougars.
It was an uplifting turn of events for RCS, which is in its
first season of sports competition, and just its second year
of operation.
Our players did a great job, theyre improving
every day, said a pleased Bulldog head coach Jim Reardon
after the game. History really was made here today.
Weve been trying to get a lacrosse team [in this area]
for 22 years. Its great to finally see it happen.
It was also a comeback performance for the Bulldogs, who
fell behind 2-0 in the first half.
Will Hallan brought the home team within one when he tallied
in the second quarter. Still trailing 2-1 after three periods,
Ben Darr converted twice in a span of less than a minute to
put Roxboro ahead to stay, 3-2, in the final stanza.
Nate Sharpe would then add some insurance with the Bulldogs
fourth goal.
All told, RCS won the shots-on-goal battle, 17-7, and goalie
Chip Isacson made five saves.
The sport of lacrosse became a reality at RCS when the school
applied for an equipment grant of approximately $6,000 from
US Lacrosse last fall.
The team is also benefiting from long-time knowledge and
experience among the coaching staff.
Reardon is a former NCAA Championship player and former assistant
coach at Duke University, while assistant coach Pete Daly
is also an experienced lacrosse player.
A lacrosse clinic was offered for the RCS students back in
October where they could learn the basic skills and rules
of the game. The team began practice back in February.
Roxboros next home game is on April 18 against Githens
at 4:30 p.m.
Along with lacrosse, several other spring sports are taking
place at RCS this year.
This week, the Bulldog girls soccer team lost to Voyger
Academy, 2-0, and the baseball team lost to Voyger, 13-9.
All the teams will be back in action after the Easter break.
