After starting the season with three losses, the Person junior
varsity baseball team has turned things around of late.
The Rockets evened their record at 3-3 overall with a 7-2
victory over Piedmont Athletic Conference foe Northern Durham
on Wednesday at Rocket Park.
Sophomore Blake Coats earned a complete game win, allowing
just two unearned runs on six hits. He fanned eight hitters
and gave up one free pass.
Hits by Tyler Cothran, Clint Holt, and Travis Vaughn led
to four Rocket runs in the bottom of the first inning. The
home team added three more over the remainder of the game
to account for the final margin.
Holt smacked a triple and a double to go along with an RBI
and two runs scored. Vaughn also went 2-for-3 with two runs
driven in, a run scored and a stolen base.
The Rockets are now 2-0 in the conference.
Tuesdays PAC-6 tilt at East Chapel Hill was called
after one extra inning due to darkness. The game was tied
5-5 after eight frames and will be completed on April 17 before
Persons scheduled home game with the Wildcats that day.
In the game, Nate McBroom hurled six of the eight innings
with six strikeouts. He allowed three runs.
Cothran (2-for-4, two RBI), McBroom (RBI) and Casey Horton
(RBI) led the offensive attack for Person.
Back on March 11, the Rockets scored three times in the ninth
frame to earn their first win of the season in extra innings
at Chapel Hill, 11-8.
Nick King and Ed Thornburg reached base on walks and Vaughn
reached on an error to load the bases in the Person ninth.
Cothran then cleared the sacks with a double to give Person
the lead and eventually the victory.
Thornburg went 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored,
and an RBI, while Kyle Gentry had three hits, including a
double, and two RBI.
On March 15, the Rockets played a make-up game against South
Granville at home and scored three runs in the bottom of the
seventh to pull out a 7-6 win. Base hits by Coats and Jacob
Winstead brought in the three seventh-inning tallies for Person.
The Rockets host the JV Challenge Tournament this weekend,
and travel to play Riverside on Tuesday They then hit the
road for a game at Halifax on Friday.
