After starting the season with three losses, the Person junior varsity baseball team has turned things around of late.

The Rockets evened their record at 3-3 overall with a 7-2 victory over Piedmont Athletic Conference foe Northern Durham on Wednesday at Rocket Park.

Sophomore Blake Coats earned a complete game win, allowing just two unearned runs on six hits. He fanned eight hitters and gave up one free pass.

Hits by Tyler Cothran, Clint Holt, and Travis Vaughn led to four Rocket runs in the bottom of the first inning. The home team added three more over the remainder of the game to account for the final margin.

Holt smacked a triple and a double to go along with an RBI and two runs scored. Vaughn also went 2-for-3 with two runs driven in, a run scored and a stolen base.

The Rockets are now 2-0 in the conference.

Tuesday’s PAC-6 tilt at East Chapel Hill was called after one extra inning due to darkness. The game was tied 5-5 after eight frames and will be completed on April 17 before Person’s scheduled home game with the Wildcats that day.

In the game, Nate McBroom hurled six of the eight innings with six strikeouts. He allowed three runs.

Cothran (2-for-4, two RBI), McBroom (RBI) and Casey Horton (RBI) led the offensive attack for Person.

Back on March 11, the Rockets scored three times in the ninth frame to earn their first win of the season in extra innings at Chapel Hill, 11-8.
