After going the first few weeks of the season without much
action at all, the Person junior varsity softball team had
a busy time of it this week with three games in three days.
The Rockets came out of it in excellent shape, however, by
scoring three straight shutout wins.
Chelsea Murray hurled a five-inning no-hitter in Persons
10-0 Piedmont Athletic Conference triumph over Northern Durham
on Wednesday at the Person High School Field.
Leading the way offensively for the Rockets were: Courtney
Watson with two hits, and Tracey Vaughan, Carly Earp, Amber
Clayton, and Allison Patterson with one hit each. Meredith
Jeffries also drove in the 10th run with deep double to center
field.
Person head coach Donnie Murray said his team took advantage
of several walks and that smart base running and timely hitting
were the keys.
The girls are working hard and keeping good attitudes,
he said. They want to win and we are fortunate to have
15 girls who are competitive and contribute in every way,
whether its at the plate, running the bases, or playing
a defensive position.
The win upped Persons record to 3-1 overall and 2-0
in the conference.
On Tuesday, the Rockets opened their conference season with
a convincing 26-0 win at East Chapel Hill.
Chelsea Murray put forth another five-inning, one-hit effort
on the mound. Coach Murray said she and catcher Kaitlyn Burton
did a great job of controlling the tempo.
Earp blasted a two-run homer over the right field fence in
the first inning and the rout was on, as Burton added four
hits, including an inside-the-park homer.
Watson had three hits from her leadoff spot in the order,
and Amanda Poindexter and Patterson finished with four hits
each.
Collecting two hits each were Clayton, Vaughan, and Carole
Cavalier. Jeffries, Whitney Williams, Murray, and Laura Painter
each contributed a hit as well.
The ladies are doing everything that [assistant coach
Jack] Pointer and I ask them to do, said Coach Murray.
They dont question, they just react with a great
team attitude.
On Monday, Person faced off against the Roxboro Community
School Bulldogs, who are in their first season of softball,
and emerged with a 21-0 home win.
The game lasted four innings, as Person gave up just one
hit to RCS.
For the Rockets, Earp had three hits, followed by Vaughan,
Watson, and Clayton with two each.
Also making the hit category were Chelsea Murray, Painter,
Taylor Fox, and Jeffries.
Murray pitched two innings and allowed no hits. She fanned
five batters. Earp came in to finish the game and had three
strikeouts.
The Rockets resume play next week with a contest at Riverside
on Tuesday, and a home game against Halifax on Friday.
