Person track teams end season at
PAC-6 meet

DURHAM — Brittany Burton took first place in the high jump with a leap of 5-8 as both the Person High School girls and boys’ track and field teams ended their regular seasons at the Piedmont Athletic Conference meet held Tuesday and Wednesday at Riverside High School.

Burton, whose high jump effort was six inches better than the second-place finisher, was the only Rocket to win an event, as she also placed sixth in the 100-meter dash behind teammate Jalisa Oakley, who took third in the 100 with a time of 12.96.

Team-wise, both Person squads finished in the bottom tier of the final standings at the two-day meet.

Chapel Hill was first among the girls’ teams with 148 total points, well ahead of second-place East Chapel Hill with 95. Southern Durham took home the title in the boys’ competition with 138.5 points, 39 better than runner-up Jordan.

For the Person girls, Oakley also earned a third in the 200-meters by crossing the line in 26.85. Destiny Poteat placed sixth overall in the 100-meter hurdles by finishing the event in a time of 18.39.

The Rocket relay team of Oakley, Burton, Poteat and Talaya Smith scored a fourth place in the 4x100, and a third in the 4x200 event.

Other Person girls who took part in the conference meet were Elizabeth Short and Corinna Leist in the 1600 meters.

In the boys’ competition, James Thorpe achieved a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, scoring a time of 17.59. He added a seventh-place effort in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24 seconds flat.

The Person 4x100 relay team of Quentin Williams, Chavon Burton, Termain Scoggins, and Trey Thomas placed fifth, while the 4x200 team took fifth as well.

Rocket boys who took part in the meet were: Thomas, Burton, and Williams in the 100 meters; Tori Torain in the 400 meters; Zach Dawkins and Tony Godwin in the 800; Walter Majors and Tyler O’Hara in the high jump and long jump; Majors in the triple jump; and Scoggins in the shot put.

The Person girls finished their regular season with a 2-6 record, while the boys suffered several close losses on their way to an 0-8 finish.
