Teen pedestrian suffers serious injuries
Tuesday morning
- 2/6/08

A 15-year-old Person High School student suffered serious injuries Tuesday morning when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing Carver Drive.

Melissa Petraccoro, 15, of 2694 Ralph Winstead Rd. was transported by Person County EMS to Duke University Medical Center following the accident that took place just before 7:45 a.m., according to investigating Roxboro police officer Jason Howe.

According to Howe, Petraccoro was struck by a 2001 Ford Mustang driven by Rita McCoy, 44, of 8865 Virgilina Rd. McCoy was reportedly traveling eastbound on Carver Drive at the time of the accident. Damage to the vehicle driven by McCoy was minor, Howe said.

No charges were filed in the accident, Howe reported.

“[McCoy] had the right of way and was going the appropriate speed limit,” Howe said. “I would say the cause was inattention on the part of the pedestrian.

“I think it is important to note to pedestrians to look both ways before crossing the street,” Howe added.

Howe said Petraccoro, who had a laceration on her head, also likely suffered broken bones as a result of the accident.
