Two persons face a host of charges related to the theft of items stolen recently from Person Memorial Cemetery and Burchwood Cemetery.
Roxboro police charged two females this week with 25 misdemeanors and two felonies each in connection with the theft of items. Monday, police arrested Debra Lenard Childress, 38, of 123 My Country Rd. Cathy Ann Long, 48, of 86 Woodsdale Rd. was arrested Tuesday by police. Each was charged with two felony counts of burning personal property. The two also face 10 misdemeanor charges each of larceny and possession of stolen property as well as five misdemeanor charges of injury to personal property.
Both have been released from custody after posting secured bonds and both face an Oct. 23 appearance in Person County District Court. Warrants for the arrest of the two were issued on Sept. 27. Magistrate Joy Hill set bond for Long at $8,000 on Tuesday, while Magistrate Herman Gentry placed Childress’ bond at $4,000.
The theft of the items was reported to police on Sunday, Sept. 2. On Friday, Sept. 7, police recovered a large quantity of items believed stolen from Person Memorial Cemetery, located off the Durham Road, and Burchwood Cemetery, located off the Old Durham Road. When police recovered the items at two different residences, they credited information received from members of the community.
Items were reportedly recovered at both the home of Childress and Long’s residence. Sgt. Gail Shull estimated that the recovered items were worth close to $1,000. While Childress and Long were suspects at the time the items were recovered, police did not issue warrants for their arrests until Sept. 27 after allowing time for victims of the thefts to come forward and identify stolen items. When police recovered the stolen items, some had reportedly been burned and some had been broken or badly damaged.
