Roxboro City Council Tuesday night could signal the go-ahead
for a housing community for elderly citizens in Roxboro.
If approved, the housing development would be constructed
in the Somerset area.
Tuesdays regular council meeting is slated to get underway
at 7 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall.
Metropolitan Housing & CDC (MHCDC) last year announced
plans to construct 29 one-bedroom independent units targeted
for elderly residents. A community building is also slated
to be a part of the complex.
The original site for the housing community, which will be
called Bernies Blessing, was off of the
Durham Road, near Azalea Drive. Unfavorable environmental
tests at that site, however, caused the developer to seek
another site for the project.
At the time the project was put on hold, however, MHCDC housing
consultant Brett Massey told The Courier-Times the project
would still go forward.
City Manager Jon Barlow said earlier that the Somerset land
was being pursued by MHCDC for the housing development. Attempts
to reach Massey for comment on the upcoming meeting were unsuccessful.
MHCDC was awarded a $3.3 million federal grant last year
to build housing for the elderly in Roxboro. The was one of
several grants awarded in North Carolina through the Supportive
Housing for Persons With Disabilities and Supportive Housing
for the Elderly Programs of the U.S. Department of Housing
and Urban Development. The programs are intended to expand
housing opportunities for the elderly.
Last month, council set public hearings for next weeks
meeting to consider the voluntary annexation of Bywood Drive
into the city limits and closure of a portion of Bywood Drive,
which is located in the Briarwood Subdivision in Somerset.
The portion of Bywood Drive that is under consideration for
closure is a gravel street with no houses. MHCDC wants to
include the portion of that street as part of the project
area.
Henry Newell Jr., one of a trio of the Bywood Drive property
owners, requested that the closure of the street be contingent
upon the sale of the land to MHCDC.
In addition Tuesday, council will conduct a public hearing
on a request for voluntary annexation of two tracts in the
Briarwood Subdivision.
The tracts total 42.85 acres and are contiguous to the existing
city limits. City water and sewer service are also available
to the tracts from Bywood Drive. The land fronts on Somerset
Drive and Bywood Drive.
