Roxboro and Person County dodged a winter weather bullet
Thursday night and Friday morning.
The National Weather Service issued an advisory early Thursday
morning for the potential of snow, sleet and freezing rain
to fall across the county late Thursday and into Friday morning.
The low-pressure system, however, did not produce as much
precipitation locally as was first predicted and Personians
weathered the storm basically unscathed.
Person County Schools Supt. Dr. Larry W. Cartner opted to
postpone the delay classes by two hours Friday morning due
to the possibility of slick spots on bridges and overpasses
in the county.
By 9 a.m., however, the temperature, which hovered around
the freezing mark most of Thursday night, had inched above
32 degrees and no problems were reported on Person Countys
roadways.
Cartner said there was no traffic-related problems reported
involving school buses or students.
Our drivers and transportation [staff] did an outstanding
job his morning, Cartner said. Everything went
very smoothly. I appreciate our drivers being extra careful
this morning as well as the transportation staff who were
out at 3:30 a.m. [evaluating the roadways].
First Sgt. Robert Pearson with the North Carolina Highway
Patrol said his office fielded no calls for reports of weather-related
accidents Friday morning.
Danny Fuller, transportation supervisor for the North Carolina
Department of Transportation (DOT) in Person County, said
DOT crews reported to work Thursday at approximately 10 p.m.
and spent the night waiting for something to happen,
but we lucked out again.
It did do a little bit about [7 p.m.] and a little
bit more about [9 p.m.], Fuller said. But it just
didnt amount to much.
Early Friday morning, Fuller said DOT crews did load up with
salt and sand and head out to treat all bridges and
overpasses on our primary routes.
The good news for Personians who prefer warmer weather is
temperatures are expected to soar near the 60-degree mark
today.
