Sandra Hicks has accepted the position of executive director
of the Person County Council on Aging, effective April 1.
The Council on Aging Board of Directors announced Hicks as
its choice for director after advertising, assessing applications
and interviewing candidates.
A familiar face at the Senior Center, Hicks has been a part
of the Council on Aging serving as Senior Center manager of
operations for the past 10 years, duties she will continue
along with her new responsibilities as executive director.
Hicks said that she will keep on doing a lot of what she
does now, but with some added duties, such as reporting to
the board of directors, attending meetings regarding the Council
on Aging, overseeing budget and financial reports, supervising
staff and developing long range plans and goals. Another of
Hicks added duties as executive director will include looking
for funding resources, such as contributions and grants, she
said.
From weekly Bingo to daily exercise classes, along with a
number of varied and special programs, the Roxboro Senior
Center is a hub of activity for the communitys silver-haired
set and continues to grow, so much so that Hicks points out
that one of her goals is to work with a committee in trying
to find a new location.
Weve outgrown this building, said Hicks,
and we need a larger and newer facility.
With growth and a change of location in the long-range plans,
Hicks said another potential change could include changing
the name of the facility.
A lot of people just dont like the term senior,
and changing the name might allow folks to perceive the function
of the facility differently, she said.
I also want to reach our Baby Boomers,
added Hicks. Things are going really well right now,
and we want that to grow.
Potential growth could also result in more evening and weekend
activities at the Senior Center.
Hicks added that she will continue her open door policy of
welcoming any suggestions or ideas from the community for
future growth.
I admire the staff and what they have accomplished,
said Hicks. Through the turnovers the staff has done
a good job in handling everything.
Having had Minnie Ella Montgomery return to serve as interim
director during the transition since the resignation last
year of former director Connie Morse, has been a big help,
she said.
Since the Council on Aging has seen two directors in as many
years, as a hometown girl Hicks believes that
her familiarity with the folks and the area will be an asset
as the Senior Center and staff continue to serve the community.
I am excited about the opportunity, said Hicks,
and a little nervous, she admitted.
Ive been dedicated to this agency for 10 years,
and I fell in love with the seniors of this community,
Hicks said. I love what I do and look forward to continuing
to work with the seniors.
