A Person County Sheriffs Department deputy remained
hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday from injuries he
suffered Saturday night when he crashed on Dennys Store
Road near the Allensville Volunteer Fire Department during
a high-speed chase.
According to sheriffs department personnel, Sgt. Mitch
Carr, 40, remained in intensive care at Duke University Medical
Center where his condition reportedly remained critical Tuesday.
Person County Sheriff Dewey Jones said Monday that among
the injuries suffered by Carr was multiple broken bones,
several facial fractures, a broken arm, a broken leg, a broken
ankle and a collapsed lung.
Jones said Carr was in for a long [rehabilitation]
period, adding, however, that doctors are very
optimistic.
Just less than 24 hours after Carr crashed and destroyed
his Ford Crown Victoria patrol cruiser, deputies had arrested
Joshua Adam Campbell, 22, of 3520 Bowmantown Rd. on a host
of traffic-related charges.
Carr and other deputies were attempting to serve a warrant
against Campbell for a probation violation from a previous
felony charge and a misdemeanor warrant for larceny before
the chase ensued on Mollie Mooney Road, shortly before 9:30
p.m. Saturday.
Campbell, who was taken into custody in Granville County,
stands charged with felony counts of fleeing to elude arrest
and hit-and-run driving/failure to stop for serious personal
injury and misdemeanor counts of reckless driving, failure
to heed blue light and siren, speeding and failure to stop
at a stop sign in connection with the chase.
On those charges, Campbell was jailed under a $450,000 secured
bond.
Tuesday afternoon, Campbell, dressed in an orange jail suit,
appeared before District Court Judge Mike Gentry. He was represented
by court-appointed attorney Chris Perkins.
Perkins did not seek a reduction in bond for Campbell Tuesday,
but informed Judge Gentry he would do so at a later date in
Person County Superior Court.
Assistant District Attorney Will Smith advised Gentry that,
while the state had voluntarily dismissed the misdemeanor
charges related to the chase, the felony charges were still
pending and that one day earlier the grand jury indicted Campbell
on the felony charge of felonious flight to elude arrest.
Campbell was serving a 36-month probation for an Oct. 29,
2007 felony conviction of obtaining property by false pretense.
A warrant for Campbells probation violation was issued
March 6 in Superior Court, just two days after a warrant for
misdemeanor larceny was issued against him.
According to a sheriffs department incident report
prepared by Deputy Heath Gill, Carr and several other deputies
were attempting to serve the warrants on Campbell Saturday
night.
Gill wrote in his report that he had information from
an informant that Campbell was heading to Jimmys
Corner Store Saturday night to meet someone.
Gill later wrote that he spotted a dark blue Mercury
Sable Campbell was believed to be operating a short
time later on Surl-Mt. Tirzah Road.
Sgt. Carr fell in behind the suspect vehicle and attempted
to identify the subjects in the vehicle, Gill wrote.
The vehicle did not pull into the store lot, according to
the report, but continued to Antioch Church Road where it
made a U-turn and headed back toward the store.
Sgt. Carr then radioed and advised when he met the
vehicle he noticed
Joshua Campbell was driving,
Gill wrote. At that time, I
pulled out of Piedmont
Electric to assist Sgt. Carr with stopping the vehicle.
According to Gills report, the vehicle ran through
the intersection of Surl-Mt. Tirzah Road and Oxford Road without
stopping.
The suspect proceeded onto Mollie Mooney Road and
the
speed of the chase was well above the posted limit,
Gill reported.
Sheriff Jones said Monday the speeds during the chase probably
ranged between 80 to 100 miles per hour.
Gill later wrote that he saw the suspect vehicle and Carrs
patrol cruiser turn right off of Mollie Mooney Road onto Dennys
Store Road.
Gill added that as he approached Dennys Store Road,
he lost visual contact with both vehicles and as he continued
down [Dennys] Store Road radio traffic had discontinued
with Sgt. Carr.
Gill attempted to reach Carr via radio for several minutes
without success. A short time later, however,
Sgt.
Carr came across the radio and advised he was involved in
a wreck near the Allensville Fire Department and that he needed
help quick.
Gill reported that Carr informed him at the scene of the
crash that the suspect vehicle had put on brakes at a high
rate of speed, causing the deputy to lose control of his patrol
car.
Carrs vehicle reportedly flipped several times and
struck several trees before coming to rest in a wooded area.
Carr was taken to Duke University Medical Center via medical
helicopter, which landed near the scene of the accident.
Deputies later found the suspect vehicle at the home of Campbells
mother, Barbara Ann Wallace, 46, in Henderson. According to
Gills report, Wallace told investigators she was in
the vehicle during the chase
and she did [advise]
she watched Sgt. [Carrs patrol vehicle] go out of control
and flip into the wooded area next to the Allensville Fire
Department.
Wallace was arrested by sheriffs deputies Sunday on
a felony charge of hit-and-run/failing to stop for personal
injury. She was later released under a $50,000 unsecured bond
after reportedly advising deputies of a possible location
of [Campbell], according to Gills report.
Deputies then checked the location on Highway 15 in Granville
County and Campbell was located in a back bathroom,
according to Gill.
