The Person County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting on a different day and time, on Tuesday, March 18, at 9 a.m. to observe the annual Local Government Day for Person High School students.

The Person Board of County Commissioners and the Roxboro City Council will meet at the same time as part of Local Government Day.

Items on the agenda include a proposed 2008-09 school system budget, to be presented by Schools Supt. Dr. Larry W. Cartner, and a presentation of the latest audit by Leonard Creech of Winston, Williams, Creech, Evans & Company, LLP.

Assistant Principal Harriett Tillett will present to the board proposed curriculum changes at Person High that include the addition of courses in computer programming, business management and sports marketing.

Also, Debbie Smith, career and technical education director for the school system, will present the board the latest annual cooperative agreement between PHS and Piedmont Community College that allows high school students to take college courses for credit.

Associate Schools Supt. Dave Bennett will present proposed policy changes to the board regarding field trips and school-sponsored excursions. Bennett will also discuss possible changes in performance and appraisal methods for teacher assistants and coaches.

Finance Officer Julie Masten will present a budget amendment for the board’s approval and will also present her regular bi-monthly finance report.

As participants in Local Government Day, PHS 10th grade civics students will observe the school board meeting, visit other Person County government agencies and departments, and have lunch courtesy of the Roxboro Kiwanis Club.

The meeting will be held in the Southern Middle School auditorium.

The school board will hold its annual board retreat later on Monday, at 5 p.m. at Tricia’s Espresso on Abbitt Street in Uptown Roxboro. Items to be discussed include a strategic plan draft; 2008-09 funding issues; and recruitment and retention of quality employees. The regular meeting and retreat are open to the public.
