The Person County Board of Education will hold its regular
monthly meeting on a different day and time, on Tuesday, March
18, at 9 a.m. to observe the annual Local Government Day for
Person High School students.
The Person Board of County Commissioners and the Roxboro
City Council will meet at the same time as part of Local Government
Day.
Items on the agenda include a proposed 2008-09 school system
budget, to be presented by Schools Supt. Dr. Larry W. Cartner,
and a presentation of the latest audit by Leonard Creech of
Winston, Williams, Creech, Evans & Company, LLP.
Assistant Principal Harriett Tillett will present to the
board proposed curriculum changes at Person High that include
the addition of courses in computer programming, business
management and sports marketing.
Also, Debbie Smith, career and technical education director
for the school system, will present the board the latest annual
cooperative agreement between PHS and Piedmont Community College
that allows high school students to take college courses for
credit.
Associate Schools Supt. Dave Bennett will present proposed
policy changes to the board regarding field trips and school-sponsored
excursions. Bennett will also discuss possible changes in
performance and appraisal methods for teacher assistants and
coaches.
Finance Officer Julie Masten will present a budget amendment
for the boards approval and will also present her regular
bi-monthly finance report.
As participants in Local Government Day, PHS 10th grade civics
students will observe the school board meeting, visit other
Person County government agencies and departments, and have
lunch courtesy of the Roxboro Kiwanis Club.
The meeting will be held in the Southern Middle School auditorium.
The school board will hold its annual board retreat later
on Monday, at 5 p.m. at Tricias Espresso on Abbitt Street
in Uptown Roxboro. Items to be discussed include a strategic
plan draft; 2008-09 funding issues; and recruitment and retention
of quality employees. The regular meeting and retreat are
open to the public.
