Roxboro City Council took under advisement Tuesday morning
a request from Person High School principal Margaret Bradsher
and student Tasha Solomon to have cross walks and caution
signs installed near the school on Carver Drive and Ridge
Road.
Bradsher told council that the request was being presented
to council as a result of an incident that happened
near our campus, last month.
On Feb. 5, a 15-year-old student suffered serious injuries
when a vehicle struck her as she was crossing Carver Drive
before the start of school that day. Roxboro police found
the driver of the vehicle without fault in the accident.
Solomon, who presented council a petition, which she said
had been signed by 297 persons in support of the crosswalks
and caution signs, noted that it did not matter who was at
fault in that incident or any similar accidents that have
taken place near the school.
She went on to say that her goal was for council to help
us getting to school and leaving school safe.
Council took no action Tuesday, but addressed the issue later
in the meeting following a brief break.
Councilwoman Merilyn Newell said the request would be taken
under advisement, and would be placed in
the realm of public safety. She added that council should
address the issue again at its regular meeting in April.
City Manager Jon Barlow noted that the city could place a
crosswalk on Carver Drive since it is a city street, however,
approval from the North Carolina Department of Transportation
would be required before one could be placed on Ridge Road.
