Roxboro City Council voted unanimously Tuesday morning to
award a contract to W-L Construction & Paving Co. for
resurfacing certain city streets and paving certain dirt streets
later this spring.
W-L Construction & Paving, formerly APAC-Virginia, was
the lowest of three bidders for the project. City estimates
had placed the tonnage needed for the project at 2,000. W-L
Construction & Paving submitted a bid of $64.25 per ton
for a total bid of $128,500.
Other bids were received from Adams Paving ($134,500) and
Barrett, Irvin & Jordan Contractors ($136,840).
Assistant City Manager Tommy Warren told council Tuesday
that the price presented by W-L Construction reflects
less than a one percent increase over last years price
of $63.85 per ton.
With the price of crude oil and other items rising, Warren
said he was really amazed and that he was expecting
a price nearer $70 per ton.
The W-L Construction bid was within the citys budgeted
amount, Warren added.
When quizzed if this years paving projects would eliminate
any remaining unpaved city streets, Warren said, This
remedies all dirt streets that have been dedicated to the
city.
He added, however, that there were some dirt streets in areas
proposed for future annexation that remain unpaved.
Streets scheduled for resurfacing with a 1.25-inch overlay
this spring include:
Lamar Street (from Gordon Street to Reams Avenue);
Lamar Street (from Reams Avenue to Morehead Street);
Court Street (from Lamar Street to Madison Boulevard);
Reams Avenue (from Lamar Street to Madison Boulevard).
Carver Drive (from Madison Boulevard o Ridge Road)
Streets tentatively scheduled for paving with a two-inch
overlay over gravel:
Bywood Drive;
Judith Lee Lane;
Somerset Avenue;
David Lane;
Gates Street;
Someridge;
Layne Street.
