A Roxboro man died Monday evening after the bicycle he was riding
was struck by a vehicle on the Durham Road.
Michael Davis, Jr., 24, of 5600 Durham Rd. was killed after
his bicycle was struck from behind by a 1994 Dodge pickup
truck, driven by Lee Wayne Lunsford, 21, of 477 Chambers Loop
Rd. in Timberlake.
The accident took place shortly before 5:30 p.m. 1.6 miles
south of the Roxboro city limits.
Davis was southbound on U.S. 501 on his bicycle when struck
from behind by the southbound Dodge driven by Lunsford, according
to investigating North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper J.L.
Pointer. Both the Dodge and the bicycle were traveling in
the right lane of the multi-lane road at the time of the accident.
Person County EMS transported Davis to Person Memorial Hospital
where he was pronounced dead.
According to Trooper Pointer, charges against Lunsford are
pending. Damage to the Dodge driven by Lunsford was estimated
at $2,000.
The death of Davis marked the fourth traffic-related fatality
on Person County roads this year.
