The Person County Tax Collection Office mailed out approximately
6,000 tax forms Thursday and Personians who have not already
received them can expect to do so in the next couple of days.
They went out [Thursday], so they should be getting
them in the next couple of days, Person County Tax Administrator
Russell Jones said Friday.
Jones noted that, while there are approximately 28,000 taxable
parcels in Person County, forms do not need to be sent to
people in many cases.
If people own their home and only have [license] tagged
vehicles they will not be receiving a tax form, Jones
said.
Taxes for vehicles licensed with the North Carolina Department
of Motor Vehicles will be billed by the county after the current
registration is renewed or application is made for a new registration.
Persons who own items such as boats, jet skis, farm equipment,
untagged vehicles and dogs and cats, however, will receive
a tax listing form. Other items that must be listed for tax
purposes include appliances owned and rented by a landlord,
tools used by contractors and mechanics, all assets and supplies
of businesses and all improvements or changes to real estate.
The form being sent out this year, Jones said, should make
it easier for persons to list their taxes. The form will arrive
already marked with items that were listed for taxes the previous
year. If there are no changes to be made, the form can simply
be returned as is. Changes can also be made on the form if
needed.
They can make corrections and send them back,
Jones said. The hope is that this will be a pretty easy
system.
In order to avoid a 10 percent penalty for late filing of
taxes, Jones said that all forms need to be returned to the
tax office by Jan. 31.
In addition, Jones stressed that persons who have yet to
pay 2007 taxes have until Jan. 7 to pay those taxes without
penalty.
The taxes have to be paid by Dec. 31 if they want to
deduct them from their 2007 taxes, Jones added.
Persons can list taxes in the basement of the Person County
Courthouse each Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until
5 p.m.
