Deputies with the Person County Sheriff’s Department apprehended a man Thursday evening in Timberlake who is charged with the murder of a man in Durham in July.

John Flowers Jr., 28, of Durham was taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies Thursday evening at his mother’s residence at 135 McBroom Dr. in Timberlake.

Flowers is charged with murder in the July 1 shooting death of Darraies McCain, 26, in Durham.

According to Person County Sheriff Dewey Jones, Durham County law enforcement authorities received a tip through Durham Crimestoppers that Flowers could be found at his mother’s home.

“They faxed us the warrant last night and he was found at his mother’s residence,” Sheriff Jones said. He added that Flowers offered “little resistance” when confronted by deputies.

Sheriff’s deputies subsequently transported Flowers to the Durham County line where he was turned over to Durham authorities, according to Jones.

Jones said that following the shooting, Flowers initially was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. When McCain later died at Durham Regional Hospital, however, the charge was upgraded to murder.

According to earlier published reports, McCain and his girlfriend had stopped for a red light on Cheek Road in Durham on July 1 when a sport utility vehicle pulled alongside his vehicle and someone opened fire. McCain was reportedly shot at least once in the side.

Flowers was the second person charged in the case. Two weeks ago, Durham resident Lamont Charles Johnson was arrested on a charge of murder in connection with the July incident.
