Janice Young Murray
Janice Y. Murray a resident of the Laurels at Carolina Place in
Pineville, North Carolina died at the home of her daughter, Jane
Dillard, on Saturday, February 16, 2008.
She was born on August 10, 1915 in the Allensville Community in
Person County, and graduated from Allensville High School in 1933.
She retired after thirty years of public employment. She remained
an active member of Providence Baptist Church for years, serving
as a Sunday School Teacher, was a member of the choir, a life time
member of the Womens Missionary Union, a life time member
of the Cemetery Committee, and served as the official greeter at
Sunday services for many years. She also was the chair person of
the Floral Committee during her lifetime and has the distinction
of the title of the oldest registered member of the church. Thanks
to Mrs. Murray the history of Providence Baptist Church is officially
on record as well as the names, information, and pictures of all
of the former pastors of the church.
She was a member of the Person County Historical Society since
1959, serving on the board of directors, and as chair of the Cemetery
Committee for the Historical Society. Mrs. Murray was a member of
the Book Committee of the Historical Society which published three
books on the history of Person County. She was also a charter member
of the Thomas Person Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution
and also a member of the Person County Museum of History.
For over thirty years Mrs. Murray was contacted by people who had
family roots in Person County and lived in areas throughout the
United States. These people sought information relative to their
family histories. She spent many hours and days researching the
information requested and donated her time and financial support
for these requests. This required many travels to North Carolina
and Virginia research institutions. Her friends and family call
her A Walking History Book
Survivors include three children Mrs. Jane Dillard, husband Noble,
of Charlotte, Mrs. Barbara Day, husband David, of Columbia, S.C.
and Robert Murray of Monroe, N.C. Other survivors include six grandchildren,
Brian and Kim Dillard of Charlotte, Stephanie deJong and Dennis
of Cary, Anna Ginn of Belmont, Julie Morgan and Tim of Mount Airy,
Cara Jo Summerour of Mint Hill and Andy Murray and Karen of Memphis,
Indiana. She is also survived by fourteen great grand children,
one brother, Ryland Young of Greensboro. Her immediate family also
included the children of Jeanette Wrenn, her deceased twin sister,
Wanda Tingen, Tony and Sandy Wrenn, all of Roxboro. Mrs. Murray
was preceded in death by her husband S. Otha Murray and her parents
Bob and Lucy Young as well as three brothers, Edward, Wallace and
Robert Young; five sisters, Nora Perkins, Myrtle Russell, Ann Coats,
Jeanette Wrenn, and Geraldine Harrington.
Her home served as the family home for her sisters and brothers
as well as all members of all families and was known by many as
The House By the Side of the Road.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday evening, February 19, 2008,
between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church. A
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 20, 2008
at Providence Baptist Church on Virgilina Highway in the Providence
Community, with the Dr. Ron McCracken and Pastor Dennis McDonald
presiding. A brief burial service will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John Harrington Jr., Steve Harrington, Dr.
Kyle Young, Sandy Wrenn, Tony Wrenn, Michael Tingen, Bob Young,
Herman Gentry, Jr.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Joe Johnson and members of the Daughter
of the American Revolution, and members of the Person Historical
Society.
Memorials may be made to the Cemetery Fund at Providence Baptist
Church, Roxboro, NC.

Rufus H. Shelton Jr.
BURLINGTON The funeral for Rufus Henegar Shelton, Jr., 79,
of 2235 Canterbury Dr., who died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008 at Alamance
Regional Medical Center following a brief illness, was conducted
at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the Rich and Thompson Funeral Home
chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Mark Fox and Dan Cubino. Burial
was in the Alamance Memorial Park.
A native of Buncombe County, Mr. Shelton was the son of the late
Rufus Henegar and Hattie Berry Shelton. His late wife was Marian
Ledbetter Shelton. His late son was William Rufus Shelton.
He was retired from AT & T Lucent Technologies after 35 years
of service.
He attended Antioch Community Church in Elon.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Wade Shelton of the home and Steven
Berry Shelton of Greenville.
Marion L. Whitfield
DURHAM The funeral for Marion Louberne Whitfield, 79, of
1112 Thompson Road, who died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008 at her home,
will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in the Hudson Funeral
Home chapel by Rev. M.B. Collier and the Rev. Patrice Cheasty-Miller.
Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Whitfield was born in Durham to the late Erwin and Kittie
Mae Ellis Williams. Her late husbands were John J. Moore and Robert
Manley Whitfield. Her late sisters were Frances Potts and Lois Potts.
Before retiring, she was a bookkeeper.
She was a member of Dukes Chapel United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her children, Martha Glisson and husband, Donnie,
Nancy Huff, Penny Brown, Sandra Brady and husband,Bobby, Amanda
Garrett and husband Ronnie, and George Corbin Whitfield and wife,
Leslie; a sister, Clarine Allen; five grandchildren, Katie Brown,
Summer Brown, Kim Malin, Bo Reed and Ron Garrett; and seven great-grandchildren,
Funeral services Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today,
Feb. 20, at the funeral home.

Arthur M. Winstead
GREENSBORO The funeral for Arthur M. Winstead, CPA, 83,
of Greensboro, who died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008 at Moses H. Cone Hospital,
will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Feb. 20, at Guilford Park Presbyterian
Church.
Born February 5, 1925 in Roxboro, Mr. Winstead was the son of Pattie
Brooks and Charles Henry Winstead. His late daughter was Jan. His
late sisters were Franklyn Barnwell, Catherine Harrison and Ella
Mildred Hall and his late brothers were John H., Samuel M., James
T. and Richard B. Winstead.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran having served during World War
II where he was a member of the 5th Division. On February 19, 1945,
he was part of the force that invaded Iwo Jima and fought on foot
for 19 days under enemy fire. He was wounded during the battle and
received the Purple Heart. He returned to the 5th Division and was
bound for Japan when the Japanese surrendered.
After his Honorable Discharge, he returned and worked in several
different jobs before entering the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill. He graduated from Carolina in 1954. After graduation
from UNC-CH he began a career in Public Accounting as a CPA. He
worked with Strand, Skees, Jones & Co., for 45 years where he
became a partner and later retired.
He was a member and president of the Greensboro Optimist Club,
a Boy Scout leader at Centenary Methodist Church Troop 160, a member
of the Greensboro Super Seniors Golf Group and Green Valley and
Sedgefield Country Clubs. He was also a member of the American Institute
of CPAs and until his death, a member of the North Carolina
Association of CPAs.
He was a member of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church, where he
served as trustee, Elder, deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was
chairman and member of numerous committees.
He was particularly interested in politics, business and all sports,
especially college basketball.
Surviving are his wife Jane Winstead; two sons, Arthur Winstead
Jr. and wife, Mary, of Greensboro and John Winstead and wife, Nancy,
of Fairfield, Ct., two sisters Dorothy W. Johnson of Chesapeake,
Va. and Marian Bagot of Sun City, Az.; a brother, William E. Winstead
of Fallbrook, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Erick, Jack, Maggie,
Mollie and Emma.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, on Tuesday,
February 19 at the

Maggie Cleo Yancey
HANOVER, Md. The graveside funeral for Maggie Cleo Yancey,
76, of 1492 Dorsey Rd., who died Friday, Feb, 15, 2008, at Baltimore
Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie Md., was conducted at noon
Monday, Feb. 18, in the Sherman Family Cemetery in Oxford by the
Rev. Brent Livingood.
Ms. Yancey was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late
Howell and Della Huff Yancey. Her late sisters were Lila Bell West,
Bessie Yancey, Raynell Talley and Grey Melton. Her late brothers
were Thea, Robert, Tom, Perry and Tennis Yancey.
She was a Baptist.
Surviving are a sister Lucille Y. Chandler of Hanover; and a brother,
Nathaniel Yancey of Rougemont.
Pallbearers were Donnie Chandler, Michael Chandler, Bobby Talley,
Cecil Talley, Charles West and Talmadge Yancey.
Arrangements were by Strickland Funeral Home.
