Josephine H. Bland

APEX — The funeral for Josephine Harrington Bland, 89, of Apex, who died Friday, April 4, 2008, at Rex Rehab Nursing Care Center, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 7, in Buckhorn United Methodist Church, Corinth. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Born May 19, 1919, in Brickhaven, Mrs. Bland lived most of her life in Roxboro. Her late husband was William M. Bland, a former Person County soil conservationist, who died in 2001.

Surviving are four children, Billie Jo Brown and husband ,Doug, of Holly Springs, Ellen Harris and husband, John Lacy, of Roxboro, Tom Bland of Apex and David Bland and wife, Molly, of Cary; a brother, Jesse Harrington of Wilmington; nine grandchildren, Brian Brown of Fuquay-Varina, John Harris of Spartenburg, S.C., Jennifer Brown King of Charlotte, Katie Harris Hester of Roxboro, Rachael Harris Revell of Greensboro, Kurt Bland of Raleigh, Matt Bland of Cary, Jo Kathryn Bland of Chapel Hill and Grayson Bland of Cary; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Roxboro Baptist Church, 202 S. Main St., Roxboro, NC 27573, Buckhorn UMC, Hwy. #42, Moncure, NC 27559 or Hospice of Wake Co., 1300 St. Mary’s St., Raleigh, NC 27605.

Emily O. Crute

The funeral for Emily Oakley Crute, 72, of 8430 Hurdle Mills Rd., Hurdle Mills, who died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 7, in the Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by Pastor Chip Sellew and the Rev. Art McGahan. Burial will be in the Oakley Family Cemetery on Archie Clayton Rd.

Mrs. Crute was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Algie and Annie Clayton Oakley. Her late brother was Pete Oakley.

She was a member of Grace Independent Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Clynton (Sammie) Crute; two sons, Clinton Ray Crute and wife, Sandra Loftis, and Mark Lynn Crute and wife, Beverly Monk, all of Hurdle Mills; two brothers, Malcus Oakley of Hurdle Mills and Ronald Oakley of Timberlake; three sisters, Dorothy Crute of Newport News, Va.; Doris Moore and Florence Oakes, both of Roxboro; and four grandchildren, Amanda Gail Crute, Andy Ray Crute, Becca Marie Crute and Brianna Raye Crute.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Wrenn, Barry Warren, Michael Moore, Randy Moore, Chris Clayton and Tommy Huff.

Andy Crute and Kevin Oakley will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Jean J. Evans

HALIFAX, Va. — The funeral for Jean Jeanette Evans, 72, of 2053 Mountain Rd., Halifax, Va., who died Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at her home following an extended illness, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, April 7, at Mill Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Frederick Wilson. Burial will be in the Winstead Family Cemetery.

Surviving are a daughter, Jeanette Brown; three sons, Karl Evans of Halifax, James Edward Evans and Samuel Edward Evans of South Hill, Va.; a sister, Jacqueline Brown of Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Frank I. Lunsford

A graveside funeral for Frank Ira (Fiddle) Lunsford, 71, of 8108 Oxford Rd., Timberlake, who died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Duke University Medical Center, was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, in the Mt. Harmony Baptist Church cemetery by Pastor Barry Chambers.

Born in Person County, Mr. Lunsford was the son of the late Walter and Beulah Setzer Lunsford. His late wife was Virginia Champion Lunsford.

He was retired from Athol Manufacturing in Butner.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are two children, Angela C. Carroll of Roxboro and Jessie Champion of Timberlake; two brothers, Donald Lunsford of Timberlake and Ralph (Cannonball) Lunsford, of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Pauline Wilkerson of Roxboro; and a grandchild, Jessica Carroll.

Lucille D. Oakley

A graveside funeral for Lucille Dixon Oakley, 83, of the Roxboro Nursing Center, who died Friday, April 4, 2008, at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, in the Person Memorial Cemetery by the Rev. Gerald Hodges.

Born Oct. 7, 1924, in Person County, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and (Nannie) Poole Dixon of Hurdle Mills. Her late husband was Sidney Raymond Oakley.

She graduated from Hurdle Mills High School in 1941 and was a member of Westwood Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Anne Stutzman, of Columbia, S.C. and Bonnie Gwaltney and husband, Chuck, of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Tim Oakley and wife, Tina, of Timberlake; a sister, Dorothy D. Carver of Roxboro; a brother, Jasper (Tink) Dixon Jr. of Hurdle Mills; five grandchildren, Edward Stutzman, Stephanie Stutzman, Melanie Brumley, Jessica Oakley and Erika Oakley; and a great-grandchild, Joshua Brumley.

Marie H. Scott

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The funeral for Marie Holloway Scott of Philadelphia, Pa., who died Saturday, March 29, 2008, will be conducted at 10 a.m. in the Beloved St. John Evangelical Church in Philadelphia.

Mrs. Scott was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Jessie Louis and Lizzie Holloway.

She was a member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church of Roxboro.

Surviving are her husband, Zachary P. Scott; six children, Charmaine Holloway, Keith Payne, Karen Johnson, Sharon Denmark, Vincent Payne and Angela Wright; two brothers; and a sister.

Juanita S. Taylor

RALEIGH — The funeral for Juanita Bradsher Singleton Taylor, 78, of Raleigh, who died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Sunrise Assisted Living, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, April 5, in Aldersgate United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bob Wallace and David N. Bradsher. Burial will be in the Person Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Taylor was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Charlie Roosevelt Bradsher and Ruby Mae Huff. Her late husbands were John Thomas Singleton Jr. and Frank Shamburger Taylor.

She was retired from the Sears Catalog Department after 30 years of service.

She was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Joan S. Jacoby and husband, Mark, of Raleigh and Johnsie S. Davis and husband, Stan, of Sautee Nacoochee, Ga.; a son, John T. Singleton III and wife, Ann, of Virginia Beach, Va.; two stepdaughters, Lynn Beshear and husband, Bob, of Montgomery, Ala. and Frances Jackson and husband, Floyd, of Summerfield; a brother, Charles Delaine Bradsher of Raleigh; five grandchildren, Greg Wilson and Jeff Wilson, both of Durham, Russell Hardeman of Athens, Ga., John T. Singleton IV of Virginia Beach, Va. and Jennifer Singleton of Ewing, N.J.; step grandchildren, Beth Toft of Cheyenne, Wyo., Courtney Cooke of Dallas, Texas, Ross Beshear of New York, N.Y., Adam Jackson of Charlotte, Denise Murray of Columbia, S.C. and Katie Jackson of Charlotte.

Pallbearers will be John T. Singleton IV, Russell J. Hardeman, Charles Bradsher, Scott Bradsher, Brad Ferguson, William Thomas III, Adam Jackson and Robert Moore. Members of the Laura Terry Circle and The Glass Sunday School Class will be honorary pallbearers.
