Bennie L. Bradsher
Mary J. Bradsher

The funeral for Bennie Lewis Bradsher, 89, and Mary Jones Bradsher, 89, of 5625 Hester’s Store Rd., Hurdle Mills, who died together Friday, April 4, 2008, at Duke University Medical Center, were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, in Salem United Methodist Church by the Rev. William (Bud) Budzinski and Dr. DuPre Sanders. The Bradshers were buried in the Hester Family Cemetery.

Both born in Person County, Mr. Bradsher was the son of the late Lewis Arthur and Nannie Hester Bradsher, and Mrs. Bradsher was the daughter of the late John Haywood and Lula Pierce Jones. They were married for 62 years as of March 30, 2008.

Mr. Bradsher was retired from farming.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, during which he received the Bronze Star. He was the chairman of the Person Board of County Commissioners for 20 years, from 1956 to 1976. At his death he was chairman of the Person County ABC Board and vice chairman of the Person County Economic Development Commission.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Governor’s Award. He served on the board of trustees for Salem United Methodist Church and numerous other committees.

Mrs. Bradsher retired from the Person County Board of Education after 15 years and was an active member along with her husband at Salem United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Golden Oldies. She was also a participant in the Person County Home Demonstration Club.

Surviving are their children, Bennie Lewis Bradsher Jr. and wife, Sarah, of Raleigh, Dr. John Robert Bradsher and wife, Shirley, of Roxboro and Sally Elizabeth Humphries and husband, Tommy, of Hurdle Mills; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Bradsher, Scott Bradsher, Laura Atkins, Emily Humphries and William Humphries.

Mr. Bradsher’s surviving sisters are Gertie Allen of Hurdle Mills and Nancy Gentry of Salisbury. Mrs. Bradsher’s siblings who survive are John Wesley Jones of Roxboro, Woody Jones of Raleigh, Evelyn Guffy of Winston-Salem and Emma Bailey Hicks of Burlington.

Pallbearers were Dr. Jim Winslow, John Winslow, Donald Hester, Brad Rogers, Calvin Hester, Nate Hester, Pat Hester, Bert Lea, Walter Cates, Jimmy Cates, Mike Laws and Dale Norris.

John Winstead, A.J. Pleasant, Ralph Warren, Maurice Hester, Burnell Rogers, Jimmy Winslow and Tommy Humphries were honorary pallbearers.

Betty L. Crabtree

A graveside funeral for Betty Lorraine Crabtree, 72, of Roxboro, who died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Duke Medical Center, was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, in the Sherwood Memorial Gardens in Alcoa, Tenn. by Phillip Marshall.

Her late sister was Nancy Magoon.

Surviving are her husband, Gary D. Crabtree; three sons, Paul H. Wrisley Jr. of Greenfield, Mass., Edward G. Wrisley and wife, Nancy, of Deerfield, Mass. and Steven W. Wrisley and wife, Pamela, of New Smyna Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Arlene F. Welsh and husband, Peter, of Key West, Fla. and Katherine C. Younce and husband, William, of Indian Land, S.C.; a sister, Patricia Russell of Greenfield; a brother, Gordon DuBois of Kennebunk, Maine; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Osee S. Miller

The funeral for Osee Solomon Miller, 85, of 10521 Durham Rd., Timberlake, who died Monday, April 7, 2008, at the Roxboro Nursing Center, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Berry’s Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Craig Willingham. Burial will be in the Person Memorial Cemetery.

Born in Person County, Mrs. Miller was the daughter of the late William T. and Hallie Clayton Solomon. Her late husband was Sterling S. Miller, and her late daughter was Joan Miller Craemer. Her late siblings were Ava S. Briggs, Era S. Wrenn, Mary S. Fuller, Ruby S. Stephens, Clifton Solomon, William Solomon, Carlton Clayton, Ollie Clayton and Talmadge Clayton.

Mrs. Miller worked at an airplane factory in Connecticut during World War II before doing textile work locally in addition to being a homemaker all of her life.

She was a member of Berry’s Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are a grandson, Bryan Peed of Timberlake; a brother, George M. Solomon of Roxboro; and a sister, Theresa S. Jordan of Roxboro.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, April 9, at Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Ernest T. Reaves

BURLINGTON — The funeral for Ernest Thomas Reaves, 90, of 1648 White Kennel Rd., Burlington, who died Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at his home, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in Theresa Baptist Church in Person County by the Rev. Herbert Brown, Pastor Frankie Reaves and Pastor Bruce Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Born in Person County, Mr. Reaves was the son of the late John and Lillian Holt Reaves. His late wife was Ruth Connor Reaves, and his late daughter was Marie Reaves.

He was a retired farmer and a member of Theresa Baptist Church.

Surviving are his children, Stoney Reaves of Snow Camp, Ann Moore of Roxboro, Randolph Reaves and Stella Strouth, both of Burlington and Steve Reaves of Roxboro; three sisters, Elizabeth Bowes and Pearl Riley, both of Roxboro and Lottie Robinson of Mebane; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

His late brothers were Acey Reaves, Elvin Reaves, Sterling Reaves, Johnny Reaves, George Reaves, Willie Reaves, Nelson Reaves and Claymont Reaves. His late sisters were Ophelia Reaves and Lila Harris.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, April 9, at the church and at other times at the home of his granddaughter, Angela Smith, 546 Leasburg Rd., Roxboro.

Pallbearers will be Randy Reaves, Stevie Reaves, Toney Strouth, Scott Strouth, Tommy George, Troy Reaves and Rodney Reaves.

Ernest Stewart Jr.

Ernest “Ernie” Stewart, Jr., 55, of 118 Cherokee Ln., died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at his home. Born in Cumberland County, Mr. Stewart was the son of the late Ernest “Page” and Docia Epps Stewart. Mr. Stewart was formerly employed by A&P and Food Lion and was the president of the Triple S Landscaping, LLC. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Sappony Tribe.

Mr. Stewart is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Stewart Nelson and her fiancé George Wade, Jr., of Timberlake; two brothers, Delton Stewart and wife Debra and Elton Stewart and wife Carolyn, all of Roxboro; one sister, Dorothy Stewart Crowe, of Roxboro; one grandchild, Kade Nelson; five nieces, Meredith Crowe, Megan Crowe, Krystal Stewart, Stephanie Stewart, Brittney Stewart, a great-nephew, Lee Womack, and a special friend, Angie Hancock.

Funeral services will be held 3PM Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Norman Talley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-8PM Monday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Delton Stewart, 2921 High Plains Rd., Roxboro.

Pallbearers will be Russell Shepherd, Tony Tuck, Lindsey Martin, Oscar Shepherd, Carl Daniel, James Seate, Larry Jones and Harvey Epps. Honorary pallbearers will be Roby Epps, Greg Stewart, and Otis Martin.
