Edna C. Bailey

ROANOKE RAPIDS — A graveside funeral for Edna Clayton Bailey, 70, of Wister Court, Roanke Rapids, who died Thursday, April 17, 2008, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church cemetery, in Roxboro, by Bishop Franklin L. Jones Jr.

Mrs. Bailey was a native of Durham County, the daughter of the late Baxter Earl and Mary Jewell Burch Clayton.

Surviving are a daughter, Janet Thornton and husband, Wade, of Henrico; two sons, Earl W. Bailey Jr. and wife, Michelle, of Cary and Bryan Bailey and wife, Mindy, of Everette, Mass; a sister, Ida Rae Wrenn of Roxboro; and five grandchildren, E’owyn Bailey, Wade Thornton, Jessica Thornton, Marcus Thornton and Amanda Thornton.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, April 21, at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Mary W. Black

BURLINGTON — The funeral for Mary Florence Woody Black, 77, of Wynnwood Drive, Burlington, who died Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the Hospice Home, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, April 19, in the Lowe Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Bennie Smith. Burial will be in the Alamance Memorial Park.

Mrs. Black was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Clyde and Emmie Walker Woody. Her late sisters were Odelia Cozart and Lou Margie Harris Ayers; and her late brothers were James, Henry and John Woody.

She was retired from Lucent Technologies after 21 years of service.

She was a member of Staley Memorial Baptist Church.

She was known as an avid UNC Tar Heel fan and an excellent cook and homemaker.

Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Robert Cary Black; two daughters, Shelia Capps and husband, Jack, of Burlington and Tammy James and husband, Chuck, of Gibsonville; a sister, Zelle Morrow of Roxboro; two grandchildren, Brandi Simmons of Elon and Chad James of Gibsonville; and two great-grandchildren, Jordan Miller and Blake Simmons.

Visitation will be from 12:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, Shelia Capps, 214 Willie Pace Rd., Burlington, NC 27217.

Louvenia C. Bowling

BAHAMA — The funeral for Louvenia Chambers Bowling, 80, of 10448 Quail Roost Rd., who died Wednesday, April 16 at her home, was conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 18, in Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. Marilyn Shipman. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Born in Person County, Mrs. Bowling was the daughter of the late Jesse and Mary Anne Stone Chambers. Her late husband was Lester Day Bowling and her late son was James Clyde Bowling. Her late grandchildren were Larry Walters, James Bowling and Shelia Bowling.

She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Surviving are her children, Joyce Helen Walters and husband, John, Barbara Ann Bowling, Louise Ball and husband, Marcus, Linda Bowling, Brenda Sue Bowling and Lester Day (Pete) Bowling, all of Bahama; a brother, Romie Chambers of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Rosa Price of Greensboro, Pauline Wells and Zella Parker, both of Burlington; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ron Holden, Lewis Elexson, David Harris, Andrew Bowling, Marcus Wayne Ball, Henry Earl Walters and Donnie Boswell.

William P. Cole

The funeral for William Page Cole, 74, of 220 Banbury Dr., who died Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at his home, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, April 19, in the Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial will be in the Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.

Born in Halifax County, Va., Mr. Cole was the son of the late Robert Dalton and Fannie Spencer Cole.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War.

He was a tobacconist for Imperial Tobacco Co. from 1956-1976. He later owned and operated Centerville Dodge and Chrysler in South Boston, Va. and Center Pontiac Buick GMC in Roxboro.

He was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Virgilina, Va. and attended Theresa Baptist Church.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge.

He was an avid golfer.

Surviving are his wife Mary Price Cole; a daughter, Pamela Cole Northrup of Fredericksburg, Va.; a step-son, Chris Schultz of Mayodan; a brother, Morgan H. Cole of Halifax, Va.; three sisters, Marie Ford of Virgilina, Va. Doris Elliott of Scottsburg, Va. and Lucy Arrington of Buffalo Junction, Va.; two grandchildren, Tyler Cole Northrup and Sarah Parker Northrup; and two step-grandchildren, Chase Schultz and Mary Kathryn Schultz.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Chambers, Don Waldo, Larry Oakley, Clarence (Heavy) Blaine, Steve Long, Jeremy Clayton, Edwin Long and David Cunnup.

Larry Johnson, Jack Reynolds, Ben Wright, James Martin, Frank Dance, Tom Andrews, Billy Reynolds, Pete O’Briant and Ed Talbert will serve as honorary pallbearers.

J.B. Hicks

HILLSBOROUGH — The funeral for J.B. Hicks, 81, of Hillsborough, who died Thursday, April 17, 2008, at Meadowlands Nursing Home, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Mill Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Frederick Wilson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Hicks was a native of Person County.

He was a member and deacon of Mill Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mamie Hicks; two daughters, Queen H. Daye and Doris H. Townsend, both of Roxboro; five sons, James Hicks, J.B. Hicks Jr., Walter Hicks and Herbert Hicks, all of Roxboro and Bryce Hicks of Georgia; six sisters, Pauline Baughan, Louvenia Paylor and Ruth Jones of Washington, D.C., Mary Carver, Anna Thomas and Edna Newman, all of Roxboro; a brother, Theodore Hicks of Roxboro; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, April 19, at the church and at other times at 589 Jones Lester Rd., Roxboro.

Edna D. Humphrey

The funeral for Edna Love Davis Humphrey, 79, of 213 Holly St., who died Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital following an extended illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, April 19, in Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Clyde Glass. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are four daughters, Denise Parker of Fayetteville, Lynnette James of Miami, Fla., Wanda Claiborne and Terika Dunn, both of Roxboro; three sons, Terry Humphrey and Tracy Humphrey, both of Roxboro and Lynn Humphrey of South Boston, Va.; four sisters, Margaret Trotter, Shirley Yarborough, Mary Ann Paylor and Stella Davis, all of Roxboro; three brothers, Arthur (AG) Davis, James (JC) Davis and Franklin (Soul) Davis, all of Roxboro; 21 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Charles Randall “Randy” Tingen

CASHIERS — Charles Randall “Randy” Tingen age 53, of Cashiers, NC died Tuesday morning, April 15, at Highlands Hospital in Highlands, NC.

Mr. Tingen was a native of Person Co., son of Mary Tingen Clayton and the late I.C. Tingen, Jr. He was a self-employed building contractor and was a member of Bethel Hill Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, surviving is 2 children: Lane Randall Tingen and Caitlin Ann Tingen, both of Cashiers, NC; 2 brothers: Jimmy Tingen & wife, Joyce, David Tingen, all of Roxboro, NC; 1 sister: Wanda T. Braswell & husband, Freddie, of Emeral Isle, NC; 5 nieces and nephews: Blake, Michelle and Preston Tingen Christopher and Bethany Gail Braswell.

Mr. Tingen is preceded in death by his step-father Wilbert Clayton.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday, April 19, at Bethel Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Freddie Braswell, Rev. Jason Evans and Tommy Brandon.

The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Robert E. Thompson

BUTNER — The funeral for Robert Eugene Thompson, 68, of Butner, who died Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at Durham Regional Hospital, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, April 19, in First Baptist Church by the Rev. Lenny Rogers. Burial will be in the Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor.

Born March 12, 1940, in Manatee County, Fla., Mr. Thompson was the son of the late Roy Daniel Thompson of Florida and Hattie Mae Perry of Creedmoor. His late daughter was Dawn Renee Thompson.

He came to Creedmoor as a very young child, during World War II, with his grandparents.

He graduated from Creedmoor High School in 1958 and join the N.C. National Guard Unit and served for eight years, until 1964.

He worked for the N.C. Department of Agriculture for about 18 months and then, in 1963, his dog (Queen) was called to work with Umstead Youth Center as was he. The youth center is now Umstead Correction Center, and he worked with the Department of Correction until November 1991. He retired after 30 years of service with the state. He was a lieutenant and later assistant superintendent of the Youth Center.

He loved to hunt and fish.

Surviving are his wife, Paula Elaine Terry Thompson, formerly of Roxboro; a daughter, Juanita Thompson Rose and husband, Johnny, of Graham; and two grandsons, David and Kyle Rose, both of Graham.

Pallbearers will be members and retired members of the N.C. Department of Correction.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. today, April 19, at the church and other times at the home.

Arrangements are by Hudson Funeral Home of Durham.

Norwood C. Tyndall

DURHAM — The funeral for Norwood Nathan Chandler Tyndall, 28, of 610 Douglas St., Durham, who died Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at his home, will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, April 19, in Gateway Baptist Church by the Rev. Ken Childers. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Tyndall was a native of Durham County, the son of Wiley Chandler Tyndall of Roxboro and Louann Wright T. Clapp of Durham, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his paternal grandmother, Beulah Tyndall Jones of Roxboro; his maternal grandmother, Betty Wright; a brother, Dustin Spencer Tyndall of Durham, and two sisters, Renee Tyndall Farmer of Rougemont, and Brittni Tyndall Awad of Raleigh.

Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the service.

Pallbearers will be Jason Tyndall, Jeremy Tyndall, Ronnie Howe, Sam McClure, Patrick Farmer and Mathew Guerrant.

Roxie R. Woody

BALTIMORE, Md. — The funeral for Roxie Royster Woody, 87, of Baltimore, Md., who died Monday, April 14, 2008, will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, April 19, in Blue Wing Baptist Church in Granville County by the Rev. James Smith and the Rev. Tony Smith. Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Woody was a native of Person County.

She was a member of Blue Wing Baptist Church.

She was an educator and taught and retired from the Person County school system.

Surviving are a daughter, Valeria Woody Huntley and husband, Albert; a son, Arnold Woody and wife, Vernessia; five sisters, Rosa Coleman of Roxboro, Martha Jane Thomas, Mary A. Smith, Willie R. Thomas and Christine Royster, all of Baltimore; three brothers, Charlie Royster and George (Pete) Royster, both of Roxboro, and James D. Royster of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.
