Charles M. Bentley

OXFORD — A graveside funeral for Charles M. Bentley, 53, of 3583 Owl Way, Oxford, who died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, was conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, April 25, in the Meadowview Memorial Park by the Rev. Wes Gardner.

Mr. Bentley was a native of Granville County, the son of the late Arthur W. and Kelly Sue Elliott Bentley.

Surviving are two sons, Kevin Bentley of Benson and Brian Bentley of Four Oakes; a brother, Arthur W. Bentley of Oxford; four sisters, Ann Smith and Estelle Newton, both of Oxford, Jane Woodlief of Roxboro and Marie Hackett of Timberlake; and a grandchild.

Lennie J. Blalock

Lennie Jackson Blalock, age 80, a resident of Roxboro Nursing Center and formerly of 641 Surl-Mt. Tirzah Road, Timberlake, NC, died Thursday morning, April 24, at the nursing center.

Mr. Blalock was a native of Person Co., husband of 60 years to Alice Coates Blalock who survives and son of the late Robert DeLonie and Jennie Painter Blalock. He was a retired Lieutenant having served 26 years with the Roxboro Police Department and was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, surviving is 2 daughters, Phyllis B. Farrell & husband, Gary, of Rougemont, NC, Jackie B. Hicks & husband, Chris, of Timberlake, NC; a brother, Elmer Blalock & wife, Wilma, of Timberlake, NC; 4 sisters, Alice B. Blalock, Pallie B. Cothran & husband, Nelson, Frankie B. Lunsford, all of Timberlake, NC; Wiliah Ree Satterfield & husband, Freddie, of Hillsborough, NC; 3 grandchildren, Tamara F. Buffkin & husband, Lindy, Heather F. Marlow & husband, SSG Michael Evan B. Hicks; and 1 great-grandchild: Jenny Lynn Buffkin.

Mr. Blalock is preceded in death by 3 brothers, Coy, Bunnie and Earl Blalock.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 pm Saturday, April 26, at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church by the Rev. Barry Chambers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday, April 25, from 6:30 till 8:00 pm at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church and at other times at the home of his daughter, Phyllis Farrell, 8417 NC 157 West, Rougemont, NC and at the home of his sister, Frankie Blalock, 747 Surl-Mt. Tirzah Road, Timberlake, NC.

Pallbearers will be David Blalock, Mertis Blalock, Michael Blalock, Ronnie Chandler, Ricky Cothran, Jr. Evan Hicks, Ray Johnson and Trent Satterfield.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Roxboro Police Department.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Building Fund, 1655 Mt. Harmony Church Road, Rougemont, NC 27572.

James L. Carroll

The funeral for James Leslie Carroll, 68, of 1014 Bacon Rd., Rougemont, who died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, following a brief illness with cancer, will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, April 26, in Gateway Baptist Church by the Rev. Ken Childers. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Born in Halifax County, N.C., Mr. Carroll was the son of the late Eugene and Lucy T. Carroll. His late brothers were William and Sammy Carroll.

He attended Durham County Schools.

He was retired from Duke University, where he served 29 years as supervisor of the sheet metal shop.

He was a charter member of Gateway Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class, the Golden Seniors Group, church superintendent and choir member.

Surviving are his wife Peggy Jordan Carroll; two children, Cynthia (Cindy) Carroll Wade and husband, Daniel, of Timberlake and Michael L. Carroll of Timberlake; four sisters, Julia Carroll Slade Murphy of Cary, Frances Carroll Swain of Timberlake, Shelby Carroll Swain of Timberlake and Carolyn Carroll Partin of Durham; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the service and at other times at the home.

Pallbearers will be Tony Crabtree, John Padgett, James Jones, Ricky Swain, Woody Sherron and Rodney Swain.

Earl (Pete) Taylor, Dan Sweet and Sam McClure will be honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the Gateway Baptist Church Building Fund, 2370 Chambers Loop Rd., Timberlake, NC 27583.

Clyde J. Henderson

A graveside funeral for Clyde Jackson Henderson, 83, of Fox Lair Trail, Semora, who died Friday, April 25, 2008, at his home, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, in Person Memorial Cemetery.

Born in Halifax County, Va., Mr. Henderson was son of the late Robert Luther and Betty Terry Henderson.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.

He was a retired self-employed contractor.

He had a love for hunting, fishing and listening to bluegrass music.

Surviving are his wife, Florence K. Henderson; two sons, Clay Henderson of Wilmington and Jack Henderson of the home; three sisters, Virginia Triantis of Charlottesville, Va., Ruth Trotter of Mclean, Va. and Pauline White of Roxboro; and two grandchildren, Jeffrey Henderson and Bryan Henderson.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Ethel B. Jordan

The funeral for Ethel B. Jordan, 89, formerly of 222 South St., who died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 1 p.m. today April 26, at Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Clyde Glass. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Jordan was a member of Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Surviving are five daughters, Annie Mae Torain of Hurdle Mills, Carolyn Jordan and Kathy Whitt, both of Roxboro, Gloria Williams of Greensboro and Betty Pass of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; three sons, Braxton Jordan of Goldsboro, Frank Jordan of Roxboro and Larry Jordan of Atlanta, Ga.; 22 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Jeffrey S. Lawing

DURHAM — The funeral for Jeffrey Scott Lawing, 37, of 1609 Stacy Dr., Durham, who died Friday, April 18, 2008 at the Carver Living Center, was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, in the Hudson Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Jack Casey.

Mr. Lawing was a native and lifelong resident of Durham, the son of Michael Norris Lawing and the late Eva Mann Lawing.

Prior to his illness, he was employed with UNC Hospital in the Environment Health and Safety Department.

He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his father are his grandparents, Norris and Madge Lawing; a brother, Michael N. Lawing Jr. of Timberlake; and a sister, Elizabeth (Beth) Bradford of Rougemont.

Pamela D. Owen

The funeral for Pamela Diane Owen, 43, of 1621 Dink Ashley Rd., Timberlake, who died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Durham Regional Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27, in Ca-Vel Baptist Church by the Rev. Jon Glass and the Rev. David Chambers. Burial will be in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.

Ms. Owen was a native of Person County, the daughter of Herman Owen and the late Louise Painter Owen.

She was employed with Person Industries in Roxboro and was a charter member of the Flat River Antique Engine and Tractor Club.

She attended Ca-Vel Baptist Church and Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her father are a brother, Michael Owen of Timberlake; and a sister, Sandra Dunn of Timberlake.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Martin, Andy Martin, Richard Yarbough, Floyd Owen, David Painter, Dale Watson, Jason Watson and Jeffrey Watson.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, April 26, at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home of her sister, Sandra Dunn, 1623 Dink Ashley Rd.

Algie L. Shotwell

A graveside funeral for Algie Lee (Dick) Shotwell, 78, of 5935A Virgilina Rd., who died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, April 26, in the Cherry Hill Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. L.L. Watlington.

Born in Person County, Mr. Shotwell was the son of the late Eugene Thomas and Lora Turner Shotwell. His late wife was Shirley Wilbourne Shotwell and his late grandson was Michael Blalock.

He was retired from carpentry, having worked for Marshall Duncan, and he was later self-employed.

He was a member of Ephesus Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Cindy Blalock and Pam Whitlow, both of Roxboro; two brothers, Wade Shotwell and Wayne Shotwell, both of Burlington; five sisters, Doris Page and Frances Zimmerman, both of Burlington, Annie Carver, of Alton, Va., Wray Long and Jean Gibson, both of Roxboro; three grandchildren, Jennifer Whitlow, Kristin Blalock and Billy Melton; two step-grandchildren, Kyle Whitlow and Sabrina Whitlow; and a great-grandson, Ivan Whitlow.

Bobby M. Shull

The funeral for Bobby Marvin Shull, 62, of 1411 Woodsdale Rd., who died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at his home, was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, April 25, in Montwood Baptist Church by the Rev. Carroll Brackett. Burial was in the Shull Family Cemetery on the family farm.

Mr. Shull was a native of Person County, the son of the late Pearley Marvin Shull and Ruth Munday Shull Eastwood. His late sisters were Joan Weaver and Linda Parker.

He was a member of Montwood Baptist Church.

He was a retired self-employed painter.

He had a love for his animals, horses, cows, and mules. He also enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Woodsdale Hunting Club.

Surviving are his wife, Carrie Whitt Shull; a son, Bobby M. Shull Jr. and wife, Jennifer, of Roxboro; three brothers, Pearley Shull, Larry (Fuzzy) Shull and Howard Eastwood, all of Roxboro; a sister, Sandra Mangum of Roxboro; and two grandchildren, Jordan and Loren Shull.

Pallbearers were Doyle Whitt, Roger Whitt, Wayne Huff, Larry Shull Jr., Joe Weaver, Hugh Holt Jr. and Darrin Martin.

Alvin Weaver, David Morris and John Myers were honorary pallbearers.
