John C. Clayton
Funeral arrangements were incomplete Friday for John Carr Clayton,
77, of 1410 North Main St., who died Friday, May 9, 2008, at the
Roxboro Nursing Center.
Arrangements are by Strickland Funeral Home.
Ellen T. Eakes
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. The funeral for Ellen Todd Eakes, 83,
of 1014 Grove Ave., South Bostong, Va., who died Tuesday, May 6,
2008, at Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted at 11
a.m. today, May 10, in First Baptist Church by Dr. William Pyle,
the Rev. Tommy Robertson and Dr. Tim Cannon. Burial will be in the
Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Born April 6, 1925 in Person County, Mrs. Eakes was the daughter
of the late Nehemiah and Nora Wingate Todd. Her late husband was
Olan Day Eakes, and her late son was Wingate Currin Eakes.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess,
a Sunday School teacher and served on numerous committees.
Surviving are two sons, Harvey Leonard Eakes and wife, Pamela,
and Gordan Olan Eakes, all of South Boston; three sisters, Carrie
Gentry, Ann Pool and Geneva Robertson, all of Roxboro; and five
grandchildren, Sarah Jennings Eakes of Richmond, Va., Todd Wingate
Eakes of San Diego, Calif., Bridgett Elizabeth Eakes, Laura Ashley
Eakes and Anne Harvey Eakes, all of South Boston.

Bessie J. Holloway
The funeral for Bessie Johnson Holloway, 87, formerly of 215 South
St., who died Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital,
will be conducted at noon today, May 10, in Lawson Chapel Baptist
Church by Dr. Langston D. Logan. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Ms. Holloway was a member of Lawson Chapel Baptist Church.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are by Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home.
Mary Walker Hubbard
Mary Walker Hubbard, age 80, of 125 Kelly Carver Road died Friday,
May 9, 2008 in the Durham Regional Hospital. She was the daughter
of the late Eddie Walker and Lizzie Bowes Walker. She was preceded
in death by her husband Bradley Hubbard and two sisters, Mamie Maude
Holder and Willow Ree Roberson. She was a member of Theresa Baptist
Church.
Surviving are her children and their spouses; Donnie Hubbard and
wife Vicki, Debra Noell and husband Tommy, all of Roxboro; Three
sisters, Odell Hawkins, Ann Wilson, Peggy Poole, all of Roxboro;
four grandchildren, Penn Noell and wife Dawn, Shannon Noell and
friend Anthony Hewett, Justin Hubbard and wife Tara, Jonathan Hubbard
and two great-grandchildren, Jake Bradley Hubbard and Sydney Jenee
Noell.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8PM Saturday at the Brooks
& White Funeral Home and other times at the home of her son,
Donnie at 2324 Chub Lake Rd., Roxboro.
Funeral services will be held 2PM Sunday, May 11, 2008 at Theresa
Baptist Church by the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial will follow in
the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Larry Holder, Tim Roberson,
Marvin Bo Hawkins, Steve Lamberth, Coleman McCullock,
Zachary Dawkins, and Mark Roberson.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Theresa
Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Theresa Baptist Church 3919 Chub

Robert Bob Marshall Pully
CLOVER, SC Robert Bob Marshall Pully, 92, formerly
of Lawson Lakes Drive, Clover, SC died peacefully on Tuesday, May
6, 2008 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, SC.
Born on March 19, 1916 in Clarkton, VA, Mr. Pully was the son of
the late George Edward and Alice Marshall Pully. One of ten children,
he was raised on a farm in Bethel Hill, NC. Entering college during
the Depression, he worked his way through and graduated from Spartanburg
Methodist College, SC, and also North Carolina State University
in 1939 with a B.S. degree in Textile Engineering. Later on, he
graduated from the AMA Academy in Saranac Lake, NY.
As a World War II veteran, Mr. Pully served for five years in the
United States Army. Serving as a captain for three years, he was
in command of the Ordinance Heavy Auto Maintenance companies in
the South Pacific Theater, stationed on the Hawaiian, Marshall,
Guam, Kwajalein and Iwo Jima Islands. Receiving two Bronze Stars
and four medals, he was honorably discharged in 1945.
After serving in the military, Mr. Pully pursued the advancement
of the textile industry in North and South Carolina for over 40
years. He worked in various superintendent positions before becoming
general manager of the American Thread Company in Clover. In 1965
he served as the director of Research and Development at Jenkins
Metal Corp. in Gastonia, NC, and also served as a managerial consultant.
He later owned and managed his own yarn company, R. M. Pully Company,
Inc., Clover.
As an active member of First United Methodist Church, he was known
to many as Mr. Bob. He served for many years as lay
member to the SC Methodist Annual Conference and was a member of
the Mens Bible Class. He was past chairman and a member emeritus
of the Administrative Council of Stewards.
Mr. Pullys most rewarding civic achievement was serving as
a charter board member of the York County Commission for Technical
Education in Rock Hill, SC. As an advocate for higher education
and to represent the people of western York County, he was commissioned
by Governor Ernest Hollings in 1962 to help establish technical
education in York County. He served as past president and board
member of the Clover Chamber of Commerce as well as an active member
of the Clover Lions Club.
Mr. Pully is remembered for his heart-warming personality and his
love of life. He was rarely found without a smile on his face. His
compassion for helping others and generosity were seen in his daily
life. Faith and family were most important to him. He enjoyed fishing,
golfing, hunting, and vegetable gardening, which he referred to
as his therapy. Many happy memories were created with his children
and grandchildren at their family lake home.
Mr. Pully is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Correll
Pully, having married in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1942; two daughters,
Vivian Vicki Pully Cooke of Rock Hill and Brenda Pully
Dean and husband Earl of Columbia; four grandchildren, Cortney Cooke,
Cary Cooke and wife Kimberly, Lauren Cooke, and Jennifer Dean; one
brother, Thomas M. Humphries of Roxboro, NC. He was preceded in
death by his brothers, George E. Pully, William H. Pully, and W.B.
Humphries and his sisters, Edith W. Pully, Katherine P. Bowles,
Louise H. Cottingham, Alice H. West, and Carol Leigh Humphries.
The worship service in celebration of Mr. Pullys life will
be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 10 at First United Methodist
Church in Clover conducted by the Rev. Michael Walker. Interment
will follow at Woodside Cemetery in Clover.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Friday, May
9 at M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Clover, SC.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made
to First United Methodist Church, 124 Bethel St., Clover, SC 29710.
M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, Clover, SC is serving the family
of Mr. Pully.

Sgt. Ernie Blair Wood Sr.
Ret. Sgt. Ernest Blair Wood, Sr. age 78 of 402 Reade Drive died
Thursday morning, May 8, 2008 at the Person Memorial Hospital. He
was born in Gaston County. Retired Sergeant Ernest Wood was preceded
in death by his parents, Robert Grady and Carrie Beam Wood, his
sister Helen Turner, and his two brothers, Robert Wood, Jr. and
David Wood.
Sgt. Wood was a US Army Veteran having served during the Korean
War; he spent 2 years in the Artic Test Branch in Alaska. He was
a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church where he served
on several committees; he was a member of the Kannapolis Rotary
Club; Retired Sgt. Wood was a Highway patrolman in Cabarrus County
for 17 years and was in Person County for 19 years where he retired
as Sgt.; he was a member of the Roxboro Chamber of Commerce where
he along with the help of others formed the ambassador membership.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy B. Wood of the home, his son, Ernie
Wood, Jr. and wife Pam of Roxboro; his grandchild, Miriam W. Johnson
and husband, Benton of Clinton; one sister, Drucilla W. Epps of
NY, NY; one brother, Thomas A. Wood and wife Jean of Greenwood,
SC; two sisters-in-laws, Alice Wood of Gastonia, and Polly Wood
of Pensacola, FL.
The family will receive friends Friday, May 9, 2008 7:00 PM to
8:30 PM and Saturday, May 10, 2008 9:30-10:30 at Long Memorial United
Methodist Church
The funeral service will be 11 AM Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Long
Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. T. R. Miller officiating.
Burial will be in the Person Memorial Cemetery with Highway Patrol
Honors.
