Gladys O. Dixon

The graveside funeral service for Gladys Odell Dixon, 92, of Norfolk, Va., formerly of Roxboro, who died on Monday, May 19, 2008 in a Norfolk hospital will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 23 at Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. William A. Boykin.

Miss Dixon was born in Person County, near Roxboro. She was one of four children of the late Ernest and Effie Dixon. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ozzie Dixon and Ernest Dixon, and a sister, Delma Levin.

Miss Dixon was a longtime resident of Norfolk and retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Her career as office administrator and trainer of insurance agency support staff included positions in Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida.

She is survived by a niece, Carol Lee Sunberg, her husband Kenneth, and their children, all of West Caldwell, N.J.; and a nephew, John Levin and his wife, Mary Jean of Roanoke, Va., and their daughter; her sister-in-law, Grace Dixon of West Caldwell, N.J.; and her cousins, Donald and Faye Howard, of Roxboro.

She was a member of Larchmont United Methodist Church.

Donations may be made in her memory at 1101 Jamestown Crescent, Norfolk, VA 23508.

Local arrangements are under the care and direction of Cox Funeral Home, Norfolk and Brooks and White Funeral Home in Roxboro.

Michael F. Nance

The funeral for Michael Francis Nance, 52, of 201 Patterson Dr., who died Saturday, May 17, 2008, at Duke University Medical Center, was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20 at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Ross Thompson and the Rev. David Chambers. Burial was in Person Memorial Cemetery.

Born in Wayne County, MI, Mr. Nance was the son of the late James Francis Nance and Barbara Lee Check Nance of Timberlake.

Mr. Nance was a former security guard at Person High School and was most recently employed at the Homestead Steakhouse.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Nance is survived by his wife, Michelle Clark Nance; three children, Michael F. Nance, II and Kristel Nance, both of Rockford, MI and Blair Nance of the home; two brothers, Jimmy Nance of Canton, MI and John Nance of Benson; one sister, Annette Jack, of Timberlake; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bryan Moore, Steve Norton, Andy Chambers, Anthony Russo, Jeff Taylor and Will Martin.

Honorary pallbearers were Dale Rimmer, Alvis Burch, Randy Cash, Stanley Bumpass, Frank Day, Chris Stewart, Shawn Harris and Ricky Foushee.

Kathleen W. Smith

The funeral for Kathleen “Kitty” Walker Smith, 86, formerly of Pointer St. and the Roxboro Nursing Center, who died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Person Memorial Hospital will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, May 21, at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Tommy Robertson. Burial will follow in the Dunn Family Cemetery.

Born in Person County, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Edmund and Sallie Morris Walker and wife of the late Rassie Dunn and George Thomas Smith, Sr.

Mrs. Smith retired from Collins & Aikman.

She is survived by her caregivers, Joyce Conner, Landeris Conner and Amanda Conner, all of Roxboro and several other nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Tuesday night at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and will be heldat other times at the home of Tim Langford, 3024 Virgilina Rd., Roxboro.

Pallbearers will be Tony Blalock, Troy Blalock, Kevin Burke, Rick Lappin, Gene Conner and Landeris Conner.
