Rev. Paul C. Browning
BURLINGTON The funeral for the Rev. Paul Casto Browning,
82, of 3721 Luther Ct., Burlington, who died Sunday, June 25, 2006
at his home following an extended illness, will be conducted at
1 p.m. Thursday, June 29, in the Lowe Funeral Home chapel by the
Rev. Thomas Holtsclaw and the Rev. Gene Ferrell. Burial will be
in Alamance Memorial Park.
The Rev. Browning was a native of Charleston, W.Va., the son of
the late Albert and Margaret Skeens Browning.
A veteran of World War II, he joined the U. S. Marines in 1942
and served in the South Pacific from 1943-44. He participated in
the Treasury-Bougainville Operation, Bismark Archipelago Operation
and the Consolidation of Northern Solomon Islands.
Upon completion of his tour of duty with the Marine Corps, he returned
to West Virginia to continue his education at Morris Harvey College,
from which he graduated in 1953. He then moved to Burlington and
attended Duke University Divinity School, during which time he served
as a student pastor of Shiloh, Camp Springs, Bethel and Mt. Vernon
Methodist churches.
Upon graduation and receiving a Master of Divinity degree and a
BD degree, he was appointed to serve as the first full-time minister
of the Wrightsville Beach Methodist Church.
He also served as a reserve chaplain for the U.S. Navy.
During his career, he also served a number of other United Methodist
churches, including Trinity in Fairmont Trinity in Wilmington; Long
Memorial in Roxboro; Trinty in Jacksonville and First UMC in Morehead
City.
He was active in conference leadership roles and serving on various
boards, and he devoted eight years chairing the Commission on Evangelism.
In 1975, the Rev. Browning was appointed administrator for the
United Methodist Retirement Homes in New Jersey and continued in
that capacity uniitl his retirement in 1998.
Surviving are his wife of more than 61 years, Winifred Lore (Winnie)
Browning; a daughter, Sherry Browning Slate of Virginia Beach, Va.;
a sister, Pauline Kistler of Waynesville; and two grandchildren,
James Slate of Mooresville and Torii Boulangger of Virginia Beach.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, June 28, at the
funeral home and other times at the home.

Mabel P. Buchanan
The funeral for Mabel Pentecost Buchanan, 81, of 911 Providence
Rd., who died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at Roxboro Nursing Center,
will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, June 30, in Mill Creek Baptist
Church by the Rev. Ben Gault and the Rev. Tommy Robertson. Burial
will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Buchanan was a native of Person County, the daughter of the
late John L. and Sally Harris Pentecost. Her late husband was Baxter
Merritt Buchanan,and her late brother was Cecil A. Buchanan.
She was a a graduate of Bethel Hill School. She was a homemaker
who enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, quilting, sewing and
other crafts.
She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church where she served
as teacher of the Nehemiah Todd Sunday School Class, had been active
as Womens Missionary Union member, Vacation Bible School teacher,
Girls Auxiliary leader and choir member.
Surviving are three children, B. Merritt Buchanan Jr.and wife,
Bonnie, of Roxboro, Wanda B. Wilson and husband, Sherman, of Henderson,
and G. Lawrence Buchanan and wife, Donna, of Burlington; five sisters,
Sybil P. Wooten, Rachel P. Parrott, Alice P. Wilborn and Mary Agnes
P. Smith of Roxboro and Carolyn P. Miller of Durham; eight grandchildren,
Karen B. Clowe, Kathy B. Mitchell, Kevin Merritt Buchanan, S. Dale
Wilson, Christie L. Wilson, James Buchanan, and Matthew Buchanan
and David Ford; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Elliott Chandler, Keith Day, Frank Gentry,
Ricky Kendrick, Tim Langford, Ray Lowery, Cecil Pixley and Dean
Thomas.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Nehemiah Todd Sunday
School Class.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 29, at Brooks and
White Funeral Home.

Rachel C. Clayton
The funeral for Rachel Carver Clayton, 82, of 212 Lake Dr., who
died Saturday, June 24, 2006 at her home, was conducted at 2 p.m
Tuesday, June 27, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the
Rev. Barry Chambers. Burial was in the Surl Primitive Baptist Church
Cemetery.
Mrs. Clayton was a native of Person County, the daughter of the
late Charlie and Mamie Morris Carver. Her late husband was James
L. Clayton and her late brother was Jasper Carver.
She was retired from Roxboro Cotton Mill and Tultex with more than
45 years of service.
Surviving are five children, Larry Clayton of Timberlake, Don Clayton
and Jean Painter, both of Roxboro, Joan Woodlief of Rougemont and
Donna Hobgood of Oxford; a brother, Dutie Carver of Timberlake;
two sisters, Leecie Carver Blalock and Shirley Carver Davis, both
of Roxboro; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Victor Poole, Johnny Walker, Tommie Taylor, Otis
Stephens, Sonny Mangum and Irvin Davis.

Inez D. Lewis
The funeral for lnez Deloris Lewis, 61, of 813 Hazel Lawson Rd.,
who died Friday, June 23, 2006 at Person Memorial Hospital, will
be conducted at 2 p.m. today, June 28, in Zion Christian Center
by Pastor Danny Johnson. Burial will be in the Mt. Gideon United
Holy Church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Edward Lee Lewis; five children, John
Lewis, Shirley Lea and husband, Eugene, and Crystal Lewis all of
Roxboro, Ricky Lewis and wife, Pamela, of Hillsborough and Timothy
Lewis of Granville County; two sisters, Joann Reed and Deborah Reed,
both of Elizabethtown; and 10 grandchildren.

Annie E. Renn
A graveside funeral for Annie Eaton Renn, 72, of 455 Al Gray Rd.,
Timberlake, who died Saturday, June 24, 2006 at her home, will be
conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1, in Person Memorial Cemetery
by the Rev. Danny Solomon.
Mrs. Renn was a native of Edgecombe County, the daughter of the
late Walter Solomon Eaton and Ruth Griffin Eaton Brown. Her late
husband was Eugene Joseph (Joe) Renn.
She grew up in the Baptist Childrens Home of Thomasville
and at the Kennedy Memorial Home in Kinston.
She attended the Baptist Bible Tabernacle.
Surviving are a son, Michael Gary Thompson of Roxboro; and two
brothers, Ben Eaton of East Flat Rock and Grover Clifton Eaton of
Belton, Texas.
Visitation will be at the cemetery for one hour prior to the service.

Annie Mae Russell
The funeral for Annie Mae Russell, 43, of 1435 Jack Hambrick Rd.,
who died Saturday, June 24, 2006 at Duke University Medical Center,
will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 29, in New Ephesus Baptist
Church in Alton, Va. by the Rev. Michael K. Farrell. Burial will
be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Henry Russell; two children, Terrence
Royster and Shaprel Campbell; four sisters, Bettie Jean Kernodle
and Dorothy Gardner, both of Roxboro, Carolyn O. Yancey of Oxford
and Jury O. Burton of Baltimore, Md.; five brothers, Ivory Royster
of Semora, Lawrence Royster, James Royster and Jonah Royster, all
of Roxboro, and Calvin Brandon of Durham.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, June 28, at Hester,
Whitted & Daye Funeral Home.
Charles B. Taylor Jr.
The funeral for Charles B. (C. B.) Taylor Jr., 79, of Hurdle Mills,
who died Saturday, June 24, 2006 at the Hospice at the Meadowlands
in Hillsborough, was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, in Walnut
Grove United Methodist Church.
Mr. Taylor was a native of Orange County, the son of the late Charles
B. and Amy Wagoner Taylor. His late son was Michael Stanley Taylor,
and his late sisters were Eula Berry, Eva Porterfield, Alma McDade
and Dorothy Nichols.
He was a driver with the Greyhound Bus Lines, with which he had
35 years of service.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving with the Seabees in the Pacific
during World War II.
He was a Mason with Hiram Lodge No. 40 in Raleigh.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Mary Jane Grinstead Taylor;
five children, Charles B. Taylor III and wife, Brenda, Sue Powell
and husband, Ed, Carl Taylor, Keith Taylor and wife, Susan and Tammy
Guy and husband, Bryan; a sister, Norma Cattelona; and nine grandchildren,
Michael Powell, Melissa Powell Machtolff, Matthew Taylor, Chris
Adkins, Casey Taylor, Erica Taylor, Luke Taylor, Taylor and Livy
Guy; and a great-grandchild, Piper Powell.
