Matina B. Dickens

The funeral for Matina Burton Dickens, 84, of 115 Hillsborough St., who died Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, June 28, in First Baptist Church by her daughter, the Rev. Connie Dickens-McCain. Burial will be in the Peace Memorial Cemetery.

Surviving are her husband, Louis F. Dickens; a daughter, Connie Dickens-McCain of Roxboro; three sons, Louis B. Dickens of Durham, Leon Dickens of Sedalia and Frank Dickens of Roxboro; three sisters, Mary Mason, Peggy Jones and Isabelle Bumpass, all of Roxboro; six grandchildren, Meltia Nelson, Terri Morgan, the Rev. Louis A. Dickens, Rhonda Dickens, Matina McCain and Myles Dickens.

Arrangements are by Hester, Whitted & Daye Funeral Home.

John (Jack) Slaughter

The funeral for John (Jack) Slaughter, 77, of 600 Hillhaven Terrace, who died Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, June 28, in North Roxboro Baptist Church by the Rev. Ben Durand. Burial will be in the Burchwood Cemetery.

Mr. Slaughter was a native of Vance County, the son of the late James Erasmus and Alma Bullock Slaughter. His late sister was Dorothy S. Clayton.

He was a former news reporter with The Courier-Times and WRXO, and WKRX, and Channel Nine News. He also owned and operated various businesses in Roxboro.

He was a member of North Roxboro Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Linda D. Slaughter; two sons, John Daniel Slaughter and Jason Mark Slaughter, both of Roxboro; a brother, James Beam Slaughter of New Bern; and a grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Tony Clayton, Gary Daniel, David Daniel, Lance Chandler, Patrick Smith, Steve Folley, Johnny Scoggins, Clark Oakley and Reed Marston.

Memorials may be made to the North Roxboro Baptist Church, P.O. Box 3667, Roxboro, NC 27573.
