Max New

A graveside funeral for Max New, 73, of 228 Evelyn Day Rd., who died Friday, July 25, 2008, at Durham Regional Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27, in Person Memorial Cemetery by Pastor Ron Pruitt.

Born in Lithonia, Ga., Mr. New was the son of the late L.N. and Hazel Watson New. 

He was a retired truck driver and a member of Faith Independent Baptist Church.

He loved the Lord and preaching God’s word.

Surviving are his wife, Merita Faye Gooch New; seven children, David New of Creedmoor, Teresa Owen of Hillsborough, Steven New of Roxboro, Sharon Taylor of Wilmington, Paul New of Timberlake, Mark New of Roxboro and Katie Berry of Creedmoor; three sisters, Sandra Paschall, Brenda Byrd and Carol Harvey, all of Durham; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, July 26, at Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Josephine M. Painter

PROSPECT HILL — The funeral for Josephine Murchison Painter, 91, of 1300 Painter Rd., who died Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at the Hospice Home of Burlington, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, July 26, in Bethel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Joe Jackson. Burial will be in the Cooper Cemetery.

Mrs. Painter’s late brothers were Glenn Murchison, Samuel Murchison and the Rev. Victor Murchison.

She was retired from Burlington Mills.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church for 51 years. She was a former Sunday school teacher, a member of the United Methodist Women, and held many other offices and served on numerous committees.

Surviving are her husband, James M. Painter; and several nieces and nephews.

Melvin W. Riley

A memorial service for Melvin William Riley, 64, formerly of Roxboro, who died Wednesday, July 23, 2008, will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 27, in the Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Alfred Rimmer.

Born in Person County, Mr. Riley was the son of the late Larnie T. and Vallie Day Riley.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Riley was previously employed with Collins & Aikman Corp.

Surviving are two brothers, Jessie L. Riley and Billy G. Riley, both of Roxboro; and two sisters, Elizabeth Beaver and Ann McCullough, both of Hurdle Mills.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 27.

Belle G. Rowland

The funeral for Belle G. Rowland, 77, of 176 Jack Ford Rd., who died Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at Person Memorial Hospital, was conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 25, in the Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial was in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.

Born in Guilford County, Mrs. Rowland was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Agathia Menster Garrett. 

She was retired from Loxcreen.

Surviving are a daughter, Margaret R. Carver and husband, Bruce, of Roxboro; a son, David Wayne Rowland of Roxboro; a brother, James H. Garrett of Salisbury; two grandchildren, Kelly Foster and Ashley Carver; and two great-grandchildren, Delayna Grimes and Kaydi Foster.

Pallbearers were Tony Shelton, Austin Carver, Paul Fuller, Glenn Carver, Jason Rowland and Nelson Carver.

Rossie C. Weaver

WINTON — The funeral for Rossie Clay Weaver, 82, of Winton, who died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, July 26, in First Baptist Church in Murfreesboro by the Rev. James Patrick Clay.

Mrs. Weaver was a native of Person County.

She was a former member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church of Roxboro.

Surviving are a son, Jessie Robert Weaver; a daughter, Claudia Weaver Richardson; two sisters, Winifred Holeman and Virginia Williams; a brother, Amos Godfrey Clay; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Arrangements are by Hertford County Undertakers of Winton.

Edith G. Wilson

VIRGILINA, Va. — The funeral for Edith Marie Guthrie Wilson, 67, of 3167 Virgilina Rd., Virgilina, Va., who died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at her home, was conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, July 25, in the Brooks Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Norman Talley. Burial was in the Virgilina Cemetery.

Born Feb. 24, 1941, Mrs. Wilson was the daughter of the late Marcellous and Lula McCullouch Guthrie. Her late brothers were J.B. Guthrie, Aubin Guthrie and Melvin (Dude) Guthrie, and her late sisters were Margaret Coates and Augusta Francis.

She was employed with Burlington Industries Inc. in Halifax, and  she was a farmer.

She was a member of Childrey Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, A.G. Wilson; two stepdaughters, Cheryl Deal of Virgilina and Wendy Brooks of Danville, Va.; a stepson, Sammy Wilson of Tuczon, Ariz.; three sisters, Edna Weadon, Betty Lou Cook of Berryville, Va. and Hallie Hendricks of Lynchburg, Va.; a brother, Dempsey Guthrie of Gladys, Va.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
