Frank J. Cummings

DURHAM — A mass celebrating the life Frank J. (Jerry) Cummings, 75, of 3007 Pickett Rd., Durham, who died Monday, Aug.11, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, in the Resurrection Catholic Church, 15353 Moneta Rd., Moneta, Va., by Monsignor Ken Rush. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Born in Waynesboro, Va., Mr. Cummings was the son of the late Ralph J. and Virginia Kirby Cummings.

His late wife was Mary Faythe, his late son was John Patrick, and his late brother was William Cummings.

Mr. Cumming was retired from DuPont.

A United States Navy veteran, he was a devout Catholic.

Surviving are three children, Cynthia Compton and husband, David, of Martinsville, Va.; Beth Gammons and husband, Tommy, of Bassett, Va. and Mike Cummings and wife, Sandy, of Timberlake; a brother, Guy Cummings of Waynesboro, Va.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Mildred M. Pegram

The funeral for Mildred Morris Pegram, 83, who died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, in Cunningham and Nelson Funeral home by the Rev. Dwight Wilkerson.

Surviving are two daughters, Ruth A. Ruth of Bullock and Michelle Jones of Roxboro; a son, Bradley Pegram of Brooklyn, N. Y.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at the funeral home at noon Friday for one hour before the service.

Valinda W. Slaughter

The funeral for Valinda Walker Slaughter, 94, formerly of North Main Street, who died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 at Roxboro Nursing Center, was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, in North Roxboro Baptist Church by the Rev. Ben Durand and the Rev. Jason Webster. Burial was in the Person Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Slaughter was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Samuel Lee and Euphemia Eunice Walker. Her late husband was William Paris Slaughter. Her late sisters were Ruth Clayton, Clara Clayton, Edna Oakley and Freda Davis.

She was a seamstress, retired from Roxboro Manufacturing.

She  was a member of North Roxboro Baptist Church.  

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy S. Marston and husband, Reed, of Roxboro; a son, Michie P. Slaughter of Overland Park, Kansas; a sister, Bobbie Jean Clayton and husband, Howard, of Roxboro; five grandchildren, Bridget Burton, Cindy Webster, Michelle Slaughter, Holly Newton and Christy Hazelwood; and nine great-grandchildren, Luke, Baylee and Kyleigh Burton, Jacob, Emma and Benjamin Webster and Alexis and Nicholas Newton.

Pallbearers were Larry Bowes, Scott Burton, Randy Cash, Keith Clayton, Steve Clayton, Bob Davis, Terry Davis and Ed Oakley.

Neda N. Solomon

GREENSBORO — A graveside funeral for Neda Moorefield Solomon, 96, of Greensboro, who died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Wintergarden of Greensboro, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, in Person Memorial Gardens in Roxboro. 

Born June 14, 1912 in Halifax County, Va., Mrs. Solomon was the daughter of the late Calvin Moorefield and Fannie Wallace Moorefield.

Her late husband was Eugene Monroe Solomon, and her late son was Clarence Love Solomon.

She was a member of Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church in Roxboro. 

Surviving are four children, Margaret Solomon Frazier and husband, Earl, of Blue Ridge, Va., Patsy Solomon Perkins and husband, Benjamin, of High Point, Donald Gene Solomon and wife, Diane, of Roxboro and Nell Solomon Scott of Greensboro; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. 

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, Aug. 13, at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

Reathfolar B. Wilkerson

The funeral for Reathfolar Brown Wilkerson, 87, of 1560 Antioch Church Rd., Timberlake, who died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 13, in Elijah Grove Baptist Church by Dr. Alfred M. Faulkner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are four daughters, Elcina Smith of Baltimore, Md., Beatrice Jones of Severn, Md., Cecile Reid of Baltimore and Agnest Joyce Crutchfield of Boydton, Va.; a son, Lee Artis Wilkerson of Timberlake; two sisters, Artie Faulkner and Missouri Bradsher, both of Roxboro; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
