Obituaries from the Wednesday, August 20, 2008 issue of the Roxboro-Courier Times

Stanton W. Coleman

The funeral for Stanton William Coleman, 84, of 209 Coleman Rd., who died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008 at his home, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 20, in Calvary Baptist Church by his newphews, the Rev. Norman Talley and the Rev. Charles Martin. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Born in Person County, Mr. Coleman was the son of the late James Stanton and Nettie Talley Coleman. His late wife was Ada Stewart Coleman. His late sisters were Mae Shepherd and Lilly Moss.

He was a retired tobacco farmer, having farmed with his brother-in-law, O.C. Martin, for over 60 years.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for over 60 years and as a Sunday school teacher. 

A U. S. Marine Corps veteran, he served on Okinawa during World War II.

He served on the board of directors for the Person County Farm Bureau.

Surviving are his wife, Katherine V. Coleman; 10 children and their spouses, Al and Robin Coleman of Lexington, Lora and Keith Brewer of Reidsville, Robert and Angela Coleman of Durham, Carol and Phil Myers of Oak Ridge, Ted and Theresa Coleman of Winston-Salem, Anita and Steve Schaffer of Raleigh, Beth and Mark Decherd of Charlotte, Elmo and Robin Coleman of Rougemont, Alvin and Doris Coleman of Bahama and Connie and Wendell Cox of Roxboro; three brothers, James Coleman of Hopewell, Va., Henry Coleman of Springfield, Pa. and Phil Coleman of Davidson; three step-children, Ray Vernon and wife, Mary Lou, of Bethleham, Pa., John Vernon and wife, Sue, of Clements and Martin Vernon and wife, Elizabeth, of Raleigh; five sisters, Lois Stewart of Richmond, Va., Catherine Epps, Nannie Lou Martin and Nettie Talley, all of Roxboro and Ann Goins, of Richmond; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Jerremy Coleman, John Brewer, Brian Coleman, Stan Myers, Matthew Coleman, James Coleman and Hunter Cox. 

O.C. Martin and Russell Shepherd will be honorary pallbearers.

Mildred W. Duncan

The funeral for Mildred Anna Wilson Duncan, 85, of 1979 Chub Lake Rd., who died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, in Theresa Baptist Church by the Rev. Herbert Brown and the Rev. Diane LeBlanc. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Duncan was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Willie Lewis and Emma Metts Wilson Wiley.

She was a charter member of Theresa Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 64 years.

She was very active in the Person County Council On Aging.

Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Jesse Willard Duncan; her children and their spouses, Gilda Duncan Lee and husband, Joe, Wanda Duncan Williams and husband Kent, all of Roxboro; two brothers, Larry Wilson and Willie (Bill) Wilson, both of Roxboro; five sisters, Ruby W. Seamster, Nannie W. Hatcher, Marie W. Carver, Barbara W. Whitlow, all of Roxboro and Brenda W. Briggs of Haw River; two grandchildren, Christy Derrenbacher and husband Chris, Rusty Lee and wife Lorie, and two great-grandchildren, Jack Derrenbacher and Anderson Lee.

Pallbearers were George Henderson, Jamie Henderson, Donald Wilson, Charles Hicks,

Mike Briggs, Craig Briggs and Richie Clayton.

Weldon Bowes, Elmo Clayton, Bobby Lawrence, Warren Bowes and Arthur Wiley were honorary pallbearers.

William H. Green

A memorial service for William Howard (Bill) Green, 87, of 927 Durham Rd., who died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008 at Durham Regional Hospital, will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, Aug. 20, at Brooksdale United Methodist Church by the Rev. Brent Livingood. A private burial will be held following the service.

Mr. Green was a native of Person County, son of the late Edward and Delia Augusta (Gussie) Smart Green.

He was a World War II Army/Air veteran.

He was a member of Brooksdale United Methodist Church where he was a layman and head of the finance committee.

He was a life member of the Roxboro Lions Club and served on the Piedmont Community College Board of Trustees and BB&T Board of Directors.

Surviving are his wife, Hilda Long Green; a son, Glenn Green and wife, Dawn, of Roxboro; a brother, Donald Green of Charlotte; a sister, Margaret Jones of Charlotte; and two grandchildren, Gemeley Poole and Anna Green, both of Roxboro.

Arthur R. Lowery

The funeral for Arthur Roosevelt Lowery, 74, of 1484 Olive Branch Rd., who died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham, was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, in Olive Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Victor Blackwell. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Lowery was a native of Person County, the son of the late Bose Franklin and Mollie Jackson Lowery. His late brothers were Rull, Elvin and Bud Lowery, and his late sister was Myrtle Young.

He was a self-employed carpenter.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean conflict.

He was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church.  

Surviving are a son, Michael Centers and wife, Tabitha of Oxford; a brother,

Sylvester Lowery and wife, Lilly, of Roxboro; three sisters, Sadie Long, Sallie Bray and Gracie Terrell, all of Roxboro; and two grandchildren, Michael and Nathan Centers.

Pallbearers were Spurgeon Long, Fred Lowery, Mark Lowery, Tommy Roberson, Elbert Terrell Jr. and H.C. Young.

Pauline C. Mangum

The funeral for Pauline Clayton Mangum, 85, of  901 Ridge Road., who died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Gerald Thomas. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Mangum was born in Person County, the daughter of the late Mancey and Mary Walker Clayton.

She worked at Collins & Aikman Corp. for several years and was a volunteer worker for the Goodwill Services in Greensboro.

Surviving are a son, Dennis D. Mangum of Roxboro; two brothers, Bennie E. Clayton and Elmo (Tojo) Clayton, both of Roxboro; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, inthe Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home of Dennis Mangum, 145 Latoma Dr.

Archie G. White

BLANCH — The funeral for Archie Graham White, 89, of 487 Archie White Rd., Blanch, who died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 3 p.m.  Thursday, Aug. 21, in the Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by Pastor Phil Kelly and the Rev. Don English. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.

Born in Person County, Mr. White was the son of the late John Sandy and Nora Munday White.

He was a retired farmer.

 He served in the US Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma Hobgood White; three daughters, Carolyn Faith W. English of Edenton, Sybil W. Clayton of Roxboro and Winnie W. Evans of Fort Mill, S.C.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Todd Clayton, Dwayne Evans, Donald B. English Jr., and Jeffery W. English and special friends Brady Gibson and Randy Gibson.

Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, and Thursday, for one hour before the service, at the Brooks & White Funreral Home chapel and at other times at the home.

Kenny R. Whitman

WILMINGTON — A memorial service for Kenneth (Kenny) Ray Whitman, 48, of Kings Mountain, who died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, in a boating accident near Wilmington, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 20, in the Andrews Valley Chapel.

Born Aug. 4, 1960 in Wilmington, Mr. Whitman was the son of Robert Howard and Ruby Jean Bowen Whitman, who survive. His late sister was Vickie Jo Whitman.

He was a 1979 graduate of John T. Hoggard High School.

He was a United States Navy veteran.

He was employed as maintenance manager with Percival McGuire Properties in Uptown Charlotte. He was formerly employed with Cogentrix in Roxboro from 1988-2004. 

He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman who loved the ocean and playing billiards.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sons, Jason Whitman and wife, Jennifer, of Roxboro and Alex Whitman of Roxboro; a sister, Carla Whitman Stephens of Fayetteville; a brother, Scott Whitman of Wilmington; a grandson, Cameron Whitman; and his former spouse, Kim Whitman.
