Peggy L. Chandler

The funeral for Peggy Long Chandler, 69, of 801 Chub Lake Rd., who died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007 at the Roxboro Nursing Center, will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, Oct. 17, at Concord United Methodist Church by the Rev. William A. Boykin, the Rev. Thomas G. Holtsclaw and the Rev. Billy Carden. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Born in Person County, Mrs. Chandler was the daughter of the late Eugene Hester and Vennie Wilson Long.

She was retired from Central Carolina Bank.

She was a member of Concord United Methodist Church where she served in the United Methodist Women.

She was very active in the Cary and Ruth Henderson support group at Duke University Medical Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research.

Surviving are her husband, Elliott Chandler; three sons and their wives, Charles and Susan Chandler of Charlotte, James and Lynda Chandler of Mechanicsville, Va. and Timothy and Paula Chandler of Roxboro; and four grandchildren, Whitney Chandler, Hannah Chandler, Elena Chandler and Jadyn Chandler.

Pallbearers will be Aaron Duncan, Neil Kirk, Dan Featherston, Bryan Holeman, A.J. Carver and Bayard Crumpton.

Memorials may be made to the Joseph & Kathleen Bryan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, 2200 W. Main St., Suite 230, Durham, NC 27705.

Gloria W. Glasscock

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. — The graveside funeral for Gloria Wiggins Glasscock, 60, of South Boston, who died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Gravel Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Rodney Barwick.

Mrs. Glasscock was a native of Durham County, the daughter of Oliver Roy and Lillie Mae Carpenter Wiggins. Her late daughter was Pamela Lynn Wiggins and her late granddaughter was Taylor Marie Brown.

She lived in Durham until 1999 then moved to South Boston.

She was a nurse.

Surviving are her husband, Irvin Peele Glasscock; a son, Jami R. Brown and wife, Christina, of Roxboro; four sisters, Barbara Ann Evans and Patricia Louise Blake, both of Durham, Geneva Mae Pope of Oxford and Peggy Lea Butler of Apex; and a grandson, Jami Russell Brown Jr.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, Oct. 17, at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home.

Lawrence H. Land Jr.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. — The funeral for Lawrence (LL) Henry Land Jr., 21, of 2041 Philpott Rd., who died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007 at his home, will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, Oct. 17, at the Freedom Worship Center by the Rev. Ricky Whitlow. Burial will be in the Liberty United Church of Christ cemetery.

Mr. Land was a native of Person County, the son of Lawrence H. Land and Mary Elizabeth Ferguson Land of Roxboro, who survives. His late brother was William Thomas James Land.

He attended the Freedom Worship Center.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sister, Candice Ann Land and Samantha Nicole Ferguson, both of Roxboro; and his maternal grandparents, William and Betty Arendall of South Boston.

Betty A. Newton

The funeral for Betty Lee Anthony Newton, 70, of 311 Cavel Chub Lake Rd., who died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007 at the Roxboro Nursing Center, was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Jon Glass. Burial was in the Person Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Newton was a native of Burke County, the daughter of the late Wilbur Anthony and Mildred Shull. Her late husband was Howard Newton.

She was retired from Belk-Leggett’s with 35 years of service.

She was a member of Ca-Vel Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Howard Newton Jr. and James (Bunk) Newton, both of the home; three daughters, Elizabeth Knott of Roxboro, Frances Brooks of Leasburg and Sarah Conner of Roxboro; a brother, Earl Anthony of Drexel; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Joshua Newton, Charles Conner, Michael Brooks, Robert Bobby Carver, Derek Brooks and Brent Knott.

Helga B. Overcash

DURHAM — The graveside funeral for Helga B. Overcash, 86, of Durham, who died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, Oct. 17, in the Maplewood Cemetery in Durham by the Rev. Jack Casey.

Her late husband was Chester Overcash.

Surviving are a son, Charles Overcash of Oriental; and a daughter, Carol Yavelak of Hurdle Mills.

She was an active member of the Duchesses and Dolls doll club for many years.

She was a founding member of Park View Baptist Church in Durham.

She was known for her artistic talents in several areas, which included oil painting, porcelain painting and creative sewing.

Visitation, with lunch, will follow the service at Park View Baptist Church on Acadia St.

Arrangements are by Clements Funeral Home of Durham.

Suresubhai D. Patel

The funeral for Suresubhai Dayaram (Uncle Sam) Patel, 59, of 1006 N. Madison Blvd., who died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007 at Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 17, in the Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel.

Mr. Patel was born in Ndola, Zambia, the son of the late Dayarambhai B. and Parvatiben D. Patel.

He was owner and operator of the Americas Best Value Inn.

Surviving are his wife, Niruben S. Patel; a son, Rakesh Patel of Roxboro; and a brother, Manubhi Patel of Raleigh.

D. Inez Powell

DANVILLE, Va. — The funeral for Dorothy Inez Powell, 89, of 300 Bennett St., who died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007 at Danville Regional Medical Center following an extended illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by Dr. Leroy Clack. Burial will be in the Moss Family Cemetery on the Vandola Rd.

Born on Jan. 18, 1918, in Danville, Mrs. Powell was the daughter of the late Frank London and Irene Mize London Gammon. Her late husband was Richard Lee Powell. Her late brothers were William Gammon and Norman Gammon.

She had lived most of her life in the Vandola community.

She worked for the former Schoolfield division of Dan River in the sewing room where she had 35 years of service.

She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church, where she was active with the ladies auxiliary, the Keen Agers group and the Women’s Missionary Union.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda P. Dix of Milton and Shelby P. Gammon of Danville; a son, David Powell of Roxboro; a sister, Mae G. Cassell of Danville; nine grandchildren, David Lynn Powell, Danny R. Powell, Gary D. Gammon, Brad S. Gammon, J. Scott Gammon, Allison Dudley, Amy Newman, Bryan Gerrell and Suzanne Cook; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, Oct. 17, at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the home.

Christine O. Whitlow

BUTNER — The funeral for Christine Oakley Whitlow, 80, of 304 15th St., who died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007 at her home, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Lenny Rogers. Burial will be in the Clayton Family Cemetery located in the City Lake community of Roxboro.

Mrs. Whitlow was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Calvin Lester and Mollie Clayton Oakley. Her late husband was Willie James Whitlow.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Butner.

Surviving are four children, Darry Lane Whitlow and wife, Barbara, of Butner, Brenda W. Tuck and husband, Riley, of Stem, Kathy W. Oakley and husband, Ronald, of Timberlake and Melissa W. Mericle and husband, Jeff, of Stoneville; a sister, Helen O. Clayton of Roxboro; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, Oct. 17, at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Thursday, Oct. 18, at the church.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Kevin Oakley, Scott Whitlow, Lee Tuck, Seth Whitlow, Michael Arrington, Clay Lowery and Jeremy Hamlett.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 44, Butner, NC 27509.

Lois K. Williamson

PITTSBORO — The graveside funeral for Lois King Williamson, 85, who died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007 at Pittsboro Christian Village, was conducted at 10:30 a.m. in the Woodlawn Memorial Park by Gerald Baker. A memorial service was conducted at 2:30 p.m. at Pittsboro Christian Village.

Mrs. Williamson was a native of Durham, the daughter of the late Edmond and Ava Hamm King. Her late husband was Charles Franklin Williamson.

She was retired from Sperry Rand after 21 years of service.

She attended the Gospel Center and Northgate Chapel.

Surviving are three sons, Gerald Williamson of Durham, Ray Williamson and wife, Deborah, of Hurdle Mills and Kenneth Williamson and wife Phyllis, of Columbia, S.C.; and four grandchildren, Shawn Williamson, Kendra Williamson, Kenny Williamson Jr. and Kristin Williamson.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pittsboro Christian Village, 1825 East St., Pittsboro, N.C. 27312.
