Edna M. Barnwell

HAW RIVER — A graveside funeral for Edna Moore Barnwell, 71, of Haw River, who died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007 at UNC Hospitals, was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, in the Graham Memorial Park by Dr. Curtis Fussell

Born in Johnston County in 1936, Mrs. Barnwell was the daughter of the late William and Ruth Moore. Her late husband of 22 years was Harvey Richard Barnwell. Her late sisters were Frances Manning and Cinda Johnson.

She grew up in Durham where she graduated from Durham High School with a business diploma at the top of her class. She graduated from UNC Chapel Hill's Business Executive Program focusing in areas of human resource management and accounting.

She retired from N.C. Blue Cross and Blue Shield as the director of personnel. She, along with her late husband, Harvey Barnwell, owned and operated Consolidated Mechanical Contractors out of Haw River where they were licensed mechanical, heating and air contractors. Earlier, she worked for Cox Toyota and then part time for H & R Block as a tax preparer. Most recently, she worked for The Agency Inc. as a bookkeeper.

She enjoyed word games, number games, history and all types of trivia. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, teaching and reading.

She was a member of the Country Club Lanes Women's Bowling League.

Surviving are two daughters, Jayne Barnwell and husband, Mike, of Mebane and Julie Caulder of Timberlake; four sisters, Dorothy Flowers and Geraldine Allen, both of Durham and Barbara Paschall and Betty Knott, both of Newport; and four grandchildren, Celeste Williams, Spencer Barnwell, Lucas Barnwell and Corey Caulder.

James H. Hudnell

The funeral for James Hugh Hudnell, also known as “Mr. H”, 83, of 77 Parkview Cir., who died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007 at the Roxboro Nursing Center, will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. in the Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel. Burial, with Masonic Rites and U.S. military honors, will be in the Person Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Hudnell was a native of Williamsburg, S.C., the son of the late Francis Alvin and Marie Wingate Hudnall. His late wife of 59 years was Cathyren Fisher Hudnell.

He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the D-day invasion with the 2nd Ranger Battalion, earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

He was a lifetime member of the World War II Ranger Battalions Association, the American Legion Post 342 in Nathalie, Va. and the Person Masonic Lodge 113.

His occupation was in the lumber and plywood business, and he worked for several lumber mills in the Southeast, most recently with U.S. Plywood/International Paper in South Boston, Va.

He enjoyed fishing, furniture building, wood carving, bird watching and neighborhood dogs. He was also an avid reader, a builder and a “putterer” constantly trying to make things better.

Surviving are two sons, James Ronald Hudnell of Winston-Salem and Louis Wayne Hudnell of Greenville; a daughter, Carolyn Harper of Raleigh; four brothers; a sister; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at the funeral home for one hour before the service..

Daniel L. Neal Jr.

The funeral for Daniel Lee Neal Jr., six, of 66 Hoot Owl Rd., Hurdle Mills, who died Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in the Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by Pastor Jack Cox. Burial will be in the Maplewood Cemetery.

Born in Durham County, Master Neal was the son of Erin Walker of Hurdle Mills and Daniel Lee Neal of Warrenton, who survive.

He was a first grader at Oak Lane Elementary School and was a member of Cub Scout Pack 293.

He attended Liberty Baptist Church in Durham.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his step-father, Jarrett Shotwell of Hurdle Mills; two brothers, Craig Philip Anspaugh and Nikolas Austin Neal of the home; a sister, Marsha Briann Anspaugh of the home; his maternal grandparents, Rex and Jill Walker of Timberlake; his paternal grandparents, Pam Champion of Warrenton and Stanley Neal of Kittrell; his maternal great-grandparents, Dudley and Eunice King of Durham and Bessie Walker of Horseshoe; his paternal great-grandmother, Cora Champion of Warrenton; his step-grandparents, Elwood Shotwell, Christian and Rhonda Shelley, all of Roxboro; and his step-great-grandmother, Carrie Lee Shotwell of Roxboro.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 12, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be James Corey Shotwell, Joel R. Walker Jr., Daniel Adam Walker and Stanley Gray Neal.

Memorials may be made to his siblings, in care of Erin Walker, P.O. Box 242, Hurdle Mills, NC 27541.

Deborah P. Shotwell

OXFORD — The funeral for Deborah Phillips Shotwell, 44, of 9048 Aaron Creek Rd., who died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007 at Granville Medical Center, was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, in Amis Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnny Richards and the Rev. Gene Brooks. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Shotwell was a native of Halifax County, Va., the daughter of George and Verna Weaver Phillips of Oxford, who survive. Her late brother was Darrell W. Phillips.

She was employed with Oxford Dental Care and was a member of Amis Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, John Shotwell; a daughter, Sarah Shotwell of the home; a son, Darrell Shotwell of the home; a sister, Wilma Phillips Gillis of Roxboro; and a brother, Donnie Phillips of Roxboro.
